About Big Blue North Recording Studio

Big Blue North is a professional, working, commercial recording studio located in a small city nestled at the foothills of the scenic Adirondack Mountains in central New York State. The building started its life in 1926 as the Church of the Nazarene. In 2001, it underwent 2 1/2 years of painstaking renovations resulting in a great sounding space that also looks really gorgeous on film. Imagine shooting in our spacious 1,700 square foot live room with 35-foot wood ceilings, or in our John Storyk designed control room with its 32 channel Rupert Neve Designs 5088 analogue console and 2″ tape machine. Capture some candid moments in our full downstairs rumpus room complete with glam station, pool table, ping pong table, foosball, darts, table games and a bar. Grab an interview or take a portrait in our front foyer or in the office. You have run of the entire building, which means that you can leave everything set up as long as you need to. There is also plenty of room to set up multiple scenes at once, store cases and gear out of sight and still have dedicated spaces for craft services and hair/makeup. The gear and assorted antiques and knick-knacks around the studio make great props and are included. Load in is just off the parking lot, up three stairs. The doorway is 34" wide. Alternate load in is off the street, up 14 stairs through a double door. If you also need overnight accommodations, ask about our separate three bedroom band house located just down the street. It is also listed on Peerspace as "The Fort by Big Blue North". We have a great relationship with our local film commission who are an indispensable resource if you are filming in the City of Utica. Additionally, New York State has a Film Production Tax Credit program for larger productions. Eligibility requirements vary based on the type of film, production company and budget, but you may be eligible for a tax credit of at least 30% percent of qualified production expenses. Oneida County qualifies for an additional 10%. An added 10% credit for scoring costs is also available if the production’s scoring costs include payment to a minimum of five musicians.
