About The Ordway House

The Ordway House is located in the beautiful, historic Western Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles, California. Built in 1909 by the California Bungalow Company of Eagle Rock, designed by noted architect Frank M. Tyler, the home’s origin story is somewhat unique. Most nearby homes of this era of this quality and size were designed by architects they chose and built to custom specifications under the supervision and approval of their future owners. This one was among the first to be built speculatively by a builder at scale, a precursor of today's ready-made developments. Initial research has led the current owners to believe it is likely one of Los Angeles’ best-preserved examples of such a home. It is new to Los Angeles’ considerable stable of filming- and event-friendly historic homes. It has never before been featured in a contemporary television or film production, making it an excellent choice for those desiring a property previously unseen by today’s audiences. It is a new entry into the event space, making it an attractive option for those desiring a unique and memorable event. It is and remains a restoration project, with very few interior adjustments that look out-of-place with the home’s original Craftsman features and character, making it an excellent candidate for projects of the time period of 1900 - 1925 and beyond. It retains 90% of its original finishings and details, such as window casements and sashes, window and door hardware, cabinetry and woodwork. Light fixtures are mostly contemporary reproductions or period replacements. The interior is surprisingly light and bright for a home of the era, Further, there are no plans to make any hasty, trendy “upgrades” or “modernizations” that would distract from its classic appeal. Its current furnishings reflect the owners' taste: classic, Craftsman-inspired, and art-forward, with a touch of punk rock. The Mrs. hopes you'll enjoy her growing art collection, which includes one of the largest collections of the work of California botanical printmaker Henry Evans in private hands anywhere in the world. We have hosted private gatherings for thirty people and two dozen dogs (a greyhound rescue!) in the backyard, dinner parties for ten and private meetings for a dozen on our main level, and artist photoshoots in our living room. Classic contemporary furnishings are thoughtfully blended into the historical elements of the lower level: Douglas fir wainscoting and trim, original built-ins with matched stained glass and pulls, and original oak plank floors. Load-in is easy with an 80x53" solid oak front door. The home has a large, well-equipped kitchen and an additional adjacent breakfast room. The lower floor area -- entry, library, living room, dining room, and kitchen -- is 1500 square feet, and the backyard is 4000 square feet of its 9000 square foot lot. From a practical standpoint, 90% of the interior upholstery is slipcovers, making most seating fabrics (couches and dining chairs) washable, and all woodwork was refinished in the last 20 years, so we tolerate accidental messes well.
