At 2500 feet above sea level this is one of the highest homes in the Santa Monica Mountains. Originally built as a telecommunications tower connecting Los Angeles to the rest of the country, the building has been renovated into a home with 360-degree views of the Pacific Ocean, the surrounding canyons and mountains and Downtown Los Angeles. Hidden inside the building’s futuristic skin in a massive operational skylight and floor to ceiling windows, giving the bright interior a fantastic quality of natural light. Various details of the space create a sense of peace and tranquility, from the soft trickle of the indoor pond to the cozy seclusion of the second story reading nook. One can explore the property’s native gardens, pausing to admire the view of Palos Verde and Catalina Island shimmering in the distance. Its remote location creates a sense of being worlds away from LA, yet it is remarkably convenient to get to. The design of both the interior and exterior offer myriad backdrops and effects for filming and photography. As an additional option, the tower can be utilized to create unique and breath-taking imagery. This is a memorable property offering bright interior spaces, creative night-time lighting and a variety of backdrops, both natural and constructed, perfect for photoshoots, filming, and music videos. For filming, photoshoots and production, the property offers: 2000 square feet of interior space with 15 foot high ceilings, ½ acre of outdoor gardens, 75 foot tall radio tower, and multiple interior/exterior architectural spaces, all with exquisite attention to detail Parking for 10 cars easily on site and room to stack an additional 8 more, lots of room to maneuver larger vehicles. Variety of surfaces: from clean white walls and natural wood in the interior to rough natural rock, vegetation and a variety of concrete surfaces in the exterior, this property offers a variety of in-situ backdrops Variety of spaces, from the tower with sweeping views to small seating nooks, this property offers a variety of spatial experiences of different scales Building walls are up to 3 feet thick so the space is quiet, location is private and secluded Toilets: 2 inside, 1 outside - portables required for over 15 person rental. Convenient ground level load-in/load-out On-site manager present in case you need assistance during your booking HISTORY AND DESCRIPTION This building originally carried switching equipment for long distance phone calls, and later television signals, as a node in the Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Company (later AT&T) network that spanned the length and breadth of the entire USA. Government-built in 1972 then abandoned, renovation has recently transformed it into a residence and event space. The essential character of the main equipment building, with its 36” thick concrete walls, is preserved as a single open space (volume +_ 2000 square feet) with fifteen-foot-tall ceilings, a mechanical and structural spine, museum quality track lighting and inventive shading devices. A central sunken courtyard area features a pond and ‘garden of the four elements’ open entirely to the sky by means of an innovative accordion skylight, whose infinity edge frame creates a Turrell-inspired view of sky and tower. The indoor garden and its connection to the heavens thus occupies the heart of this crystalline and concrete relic of the Cold War. Stairs flanked by a diagonal bookshelf lead to a mezzanine that snakes mid-air through the space past a laundry closet, a large window looking out towards Las Flores Canyon, and ends in a reading nook, a quiet and private place suspended within the building. A semi-commercial open concept kitchen and repurposed steel frame outdoor kitchen allow catering for groups small and large. Two bathrooms tucked under “blast walls” designed to protect the original building opening from the lateral impact of a nuclear explosion offer stunning views of mountains, sky, ocean, and city. Adjacent to the building in a five level 75 foot tall steel and concrete tower that still holds the four original microwave horn antennae, an integral part of the line-of-sight wireless conduit which facilitated communication through the mountains. Views from the tower and building encompass a 360-degree view of the ocean, basin, valley and layers of mountain ranges. Clear day views stretch over 100 miles in any direction; Topa Topa, Pinos, Wilson, San Antonio, San Gorgonio, and San Jacinto (among many others) are among the mountains that can be seen. The ocean views look due south at Santa Catalina Island with San Clemente, Santa Barbara and San Nicolas Islands also visible on clear days. The mountain peaks of Santa Cruz Island can be seen framed through a gap in the Santa Monica Mountains from the top level of the tower, perhaps the most are-inspiring view of them all. The property is almost entirely surrounded by preserved natural areas. The closest houses are a quarter mile away or so. The abundant natural light in the main building, as well as adjustable lighting, give it unique potential as a location for photography and filming. The large open space is also perfect for small corporate retreats, yoga, meditation, sound baths, gallery pop ups, and for fashion photography and events. In addition to the main building and landscape areas, a renovated container on the site with framed views to the north and south is also available for use as an exclusive bedroom; as well as a small semi-enclosed concrete and limestone room that has one of the best views of the ocean , with a low native rock garden and in-situ Ceanothus trees creating a unique feeling of enclosure. For an additional cost the tower can be accessed, as long as safety protocols are adhered to (use of harness and safety equipment) and guests are accompanied by one of the owners, their representatives or the onsite manager. The outdoor areas around the buildings and tower sit on a flat acre of land with plentiful parking as well as large, flexible entertaining and relaxation spaces. The property is surrounded by gardens that connect to the native landscape of the Santa Monica Mountains. When you pass through the tall metal gate in your car you are given a serene glimpse of the Pacific Ocean framed by an earthen berm. As you get closer you can see Palos Verde and Catalina Island shimmering in the distance. A larger terrace close to the kitchen has a barbeque center, dining area and sculptural seating (including a large daybed) positioned to offer a variety of views while affording the choice of sitting in the shade or sunshine. In addition to entertaining, this area is perfect for yoga and meditation. Further along the south edge there is a converted 40-foot-long container swimming pool and hot-tub with a window on one end that frames the view of Santa Catalina Island to the south. A raised deck, large lawn and the concrete base of the tower provide pool-adjacent lounging and play areas. There is a strong connection between interior and exterior on this property, as well as a strong connection of the property to the surrounding context of mountains and sea. At certain times of the day one can count as many as 7 layers of distant mountain ridges thrown into silhouette by the setting sun, as far as the eye can see. The landscape at S.A.L.T is truly unique, dominated by sea, air, land, and the tower. Its uses are as infinite and expansive as your imagination. This property has been used in the past for various events and filming; below are a few examples: Music Videos “Falling into Focus” by Bob Moses, “Wake Up” by the Vamps, “Life is Beautiful” featuring 2 Chainz, Larry June, and The Alchemist, and “Whiplash” by Aespa Commercial Shoots SKIMS, Away Luggage, Autohaus BMW, Fabletics Scrubs, Naked Cashmere, REEF, RVCA Publications LA in a Minute, The Panofold
