The Captain Albert Johnson house is a simple Victorian farmhouse in the Eastlake style. It is a registered local landmark and one of the first homes built in Monrovia. The Eastlake aesthetic is characterized by a sharp, angular, often square appearance, horizontal siding, squared bay windows and carved, elaborate wood decorations. The deep front porch has a spindled frieze and a guilloche design on the outside upper corners of the porch. The house retains its original siding. The original plain glass window in the tower was replaced by stained glass, and the crown on top of the tower was reconstructed by a previous owner. This house also has a “ghost” story: The Johnson’s only surviving daughter, Alberta, died in her upstairs bedroom, and reportedly haunts the house occasionally. The property has been completely restored to its turn-of-the-century aesthetic. Everything in the house is period correct, from the lighting to the plumbing. The kitchen and bathrooms reflect a 1900-1920s era while the original rooms reflect the 1880s roots of the house. The gardens are lush and a plunge pool in the style of a reflecting pool has been installed in the rear yard. There is an original brick carriage house at the rear of the property that is also restored and is used as guest house. It has brick walls inside and out with soaring beamed ceilings.
