This newly built-out space is private and can accommodate a variety of rental uses. The standing capacity of our beautiful space is about 130 people with about 50 people doing active movement at the same time. We have 30 chairs available, you're welcome to rent and/or bring your own folding chairs for a larger event. The entire space is 2350 square feet , which includes (2) ADA accessible unisex bathrooms. Our space is private with frosted glass coverings on all the windows. It is relatively quiet although it is on a busy street, so you will hear some traffic outside. When the newly installed commercial heating and air conditioners are on they present enough white noise to drown out any outside traffic. The layout of the space is fairly straightforward: an open box with a floor to ceiling cement column in the middle. Monkey bars separate one half from the other. Our ceilings are 15" high with electrical outlets about every 12'. This space offers an Epson visual projector with 8'x10' wall screen, white boards with markers, a high quality 50" screen LED TV, a newly installed blue tooth enabled audio system with downward hanging pendant speakers from the ceiling. This newly built out space is built out as of May 2017 and has passed all new City of Berkeley and State of California Codes for ADA accessibility and Platinum LEED certification energy use. We offer classes with qualified instructors at varying levels depending on the size of the class and the specific request. To learn more about the type of activities that happen in this space on a regular weekly basis, feel free to reach out via Peerspace messaging. Thank you for considering our space for your rental needs.
We permit outside professional caterers inside this space. Food & Alcohol is fine to serve here. If you're planning on selling alcohol for your event you'll need to get a 1 day ABC permit. We are youth-friendly, family-friendly, and welcoming to people of all ages, genders, cultures, and fitness levels. We often host live music performances but sound must stay at acceptable levels throughout all rental activities as there are families living above this space in condo units. Your booking length MUST include time for set-up and breakdown. The booking clock starts ticking when you arrive to set up, not when the event is open to your group/public. If for any reason our staff determines that your group's clean up was insufficient, we will hire professional cleaners to finish the job, properly paid for by the client: $75 per hour.
Peter is such a wonderful and accommodating host and everything that everyone has said before me is spot on. This was a truly last minute booking and Peter came through for us. The space is a real good steal for the price. Thank you again Peter and we hope to have more celebrations there in the future.
Soja was a perfect space to hold our Baby Shower event. We had over 100 people in attendance. Many people told us how great and spacious the space was. Peter was absolutely amazing, kind, helpful, and informative. He made everything easy for us and trusted us when he had to leave and run some errands. The space was easy to setup and very accessible from the freeway. The best part was that it was kid friendly! The mats allowed for kids to play and adults to relax. I would definitely rent this space again in the future given the reasonable price.
This place was great! Peter was extremely responsive, helpful, and flexible. We had a rowdier crowd, and I was nervous about finding a place and a host that would be understanding of that, and where we could do what we wanted to do. And actually, I did not at all feel like our event was anything less than we wanted it to be, because Peter was so chill and this place was so versatile. Because it's a big open space with concrete floors, it really can be anything you want it to be, and is a rare space that can actually be well-suited for larger, wilder groups.
Peter was so easy to work with and was so accommodating with all my requests and questions. The space is great! I held a birthday party for ~30-40 friends with a Karaoke Jockey and food and drinks, and it was the perfect space for all of that. Easy to unload everything in the garage. Peter also led a martial arts class at the beginning of the party with two of his students that was challenging, silly, informative, and fun for a bunch of people in their late 20s and early 30s. I would recommend not only the space to anyone, but also the workshops and classes at Soja, as I'm sure they're at least as great as the taste we got at the party.
