One of the best experience ever with Jorge! We had a last minute same day shoot that we needed and Jorge was able to accommodate us! His place is big, roomy, and is very affordable. I will definitely recommend use this place.
This is a great looking space on camera but it has significant safety issues. I would not recommend it if your crew is larger than about 5 people or using more than 20 A. Bathrooms: Jorge warned us that the bathrooms were dirty, so we brought in a professional cleaning crew (an added expense). Within one two days though, it got bad enough again that it was deemed a health hazard. Let me be explicit, just so you can understand what I couldn't have guessed when he warned me: people in the building routinely throw their used toilet paper in a box next to the toilet, not the toilet itself. As a result, there is fecal matter sitting in the open air. If you have the boxes emptied, someone just puts their poop in there again the next day. Jorge did let us use a restroom included in the unit, but you can't have one toilet for more than about 10 people for a 12 hour day. Odor and rodents: Because of the food distributor on the ground floor, there's a dumpster full of food waste which breeds rot and attracts vermin. I was worried about liability if cast or crew were to get bitten. These two issues issue caused one of my actors to threaten reporting the conditions to SAG. Power: We never blew a circuit but we did not have control of any power. This means we were limited to 20 hypothetical amps at all times ("hypothetical" because we had to guess where these circuits might be and what their capacity is.) We had to tiptoe around our power use, which is a major handicap. Jorge mentioned he was unclear on the power situation but I think he significantly downplayed it before we booked. I'm not sure if he was being deceptive or just ignorant. He showed us a breaker box during our scout to demonstrate our potential ability to control power. After we booked, though, we discovered that the breaker box has long been disconnected. It's just there for show. And for fooling gullible filmmakers. Scarce and uncontrolled power also meant we had nothing to combat the intense daytime heat. You can't justify bringing in an AC unit to keep the actors' costumes from becoming visibly sweaty on camera if it could kill all your lights. The heat became a crew morale issue as well. Access: Jorge had people coming and going during the shoot, within the time that it was rented to us. This had the potential to ruin a take and caused dustups with crew over space and equipment. In short, know that when you book the space, it's not really "yours" for those hours. Positive aspects: The guys who run the parking lot were super friendly and helpful. Neighbors in surrounding units were the same. There are beautiful views outside the windows. Jorge was pretty cool about us setting up 15 mins before and standing around 15 mins after as the DIT cleared drives. THE UPSHOT: This location could work for an informal shoot but it presents some serious concerns. I was worried about my shoot getting shut down, whether from a union complaint, a rat bite, or a power outage. I know these issues are more a problem with the building as a whole (and therefore outside of Jorge's direct control), but they threatened the viability of our shoot. Please seriously consider these issues before booking.
