Ashley J. booked an event for 85 people
OVERALL ATROCIOUS EXPERIENCE!!! My close friend and I are young upcoming entrepreneurs and wanted to throw an empowering event highlighting small owned businesses. We believed that Ceremony would be the ideal location to have this event. This was the first time that both of us executed an event and we feel like the owner as well as other employees of the establishment took advantage of that (and us). What was supposed to be a very big moment for us was simply ruined. As mentioned before, this was our first event, therefore a lot of this is new to us. Initially we communicated what type of event we were expected to have with the owner. We discussed how we were able to utilize the venue to meet our expectations. Apparently, the owner gave us the price as if we were keeping the bar, even though we communicated that we did not need to keep the bar for this event. However, we were under the impression this was the price to rent the venue (without bar) and booked the venue. The venue was booked since around early June. Once the venue was booked, we placed our focus on planning the event and were under the impression that our locations is handled. (There was no contract ever signed regarding renting this venue through out the entire process.) The event was held yesterday August 10th. A few days prior to this event is when the owner then mentions, that for the event we were expected to make $1500 at the bar and if not we were expected to pay the difference. However, everything made at the bar during our event was theirs. My friend and I were a bit confused because this was NEVER mentioned since we’ve booked the location. At least 2- 3 days before the event the options given to us from the owner was either: He can refund us only HALF of the payment we’ve made to rent the spot leaving us 2 days to find a new venue, lowering the bar gratuity from $1500 to $1200, or if we did not want the bar (which is what we asked for) we had to pay double of which we initially paid. All three options were very unfair and we definitely felt lowballed. The event took place from 2pm-7pm, we came in for set up at 1pm. We were again ambushed in the very start of our event about what was going to be the deal with the bar and was asked for a form of payment to charge what THEY felt was appropriate at the ending of the event. I just wanted to understand how any of the options he provided to us was fair especially last minute. Regardless, we were going to pay but some things I just wanted cleared up first. When questioned the owner grew frustrated and started to threaten to end our event once he was not getting his way. I gave him my form of payment and temporarily, that was handled. Not too long after the owner, leaving the female manager in charge. During the event, we were given the biggest bathroom, to do make up and changing for the models of the fashion show portion of the event. I had more people than what the given space can accommodate, which was okay because we also used the hallway space. No one can be blamed for that. However, one of the bartenders, who I believe was drunk pushed through some of the ladies (who were changing) to ask if the bathroom ceiling was leaking. I told him I would check, but do not proceed to push through the models to get to the bathroom because all of these ladies were changing. I checked, and let him know that the bathroom celling was not leaking. However, he makes a statement regarding how beautiful the models look/are, COMPLETELY disregarded what I asked of him and pushed all the way through and opened the door on the ladies that were changing in the bathroom to “check for himself”. Such behavior from an employee is absolutely inappropriate and unacceptable. The crazier part about this is, not too long after this occurred the bathroom ceiling actually started leaking, which honestly, I do not believe was a coincidence. Strangely, now that the bathroom ceiling was actually leaking, none of the employees were concerned and did anything to stop it. The water dripped over the ladies changing for the remainder of the event. To wrap this up at the ending of the event, the female manager gave us the difference of what was not made at the bar which SIMPLY did not add up looking at the amount of people that attended. There was a lot of inconsistency. First off, the drink selection was extremely limited. How do you expect us to make money at the bar with such limited selection? Ive checked prices for their drinks on a regular night and I’m under the impression that our drinks were charged cheaper. Ive also was told by a few attendees that they were straight up not charged for their drinks. Just like the owner, she did not care much to communicate things with us that we were trying to get clarity on and just cared about getting paid. When getting questioned she made statements such as “I don’t appreciate being penny pinched”, “I am not scamming anyone” and even went as far as just ignoring us as she’s actually swiping the card for payment. Of course, we’ve wished to contact authorities and have them handle the situation but there was so much hard work and dedication put into this event , to not have this event happen. We can’t help to feel that we’ve been ripped off hugely, and also taken advantage of. There was a lot to learn from this experience and I just wanted to share. I refuse to stoop down to their level and go as far to say “Do not book this venue”, but definitely be very careful with the owner and employees of this establishment. Our day was ruined and we simply could not entirely enjoy what we worked so hard for.
