Read below for even more information. LAY OF THE LAND By night the area is quiet with the last remaining nautical industries making up the shoreline. It is a strange and beautiful juxtaposition. We are one of the last old mansions on what was once called “Captains’ Row.” Thus there is no artifice about our remoteness. It is a hideaway, a gem, and its exclusivity is genuine. Yet, surprisingly, from Manhattan it is only a 25 minute ferry ride followed by a 15 minute drive, not nearly as far a stretch in distance as it is for the imagination. The villa sits stately facing the water. Its weathered stucco façade exposing some of the original bricks, like an old world charm found on the beach. The Gothic Ogee arched windows and the carved brackets lining the extended eaves give the impression of entering a small palazzo on the Grand Canal. Through the original iron gate the guest walk up the blue stone path, up the stairs to the front door. Inside on the first floor, features include: high ceilings, two fireplaces, original gas brass light fixtures, a 16 person 10ft round dining table, a disco shark, a grand square piano from 1853 and a full bar with espresso based coffee service. The walls in the dining room and in all the rooms on the second floor and third floors are a testament to the house’s history. Pickled layers of flaking paint, crazing plaster and charred original woodwork tell the tale of a house fire, texture is seeping staining, evident are the-gone panel moldings, floors left to tell their tale, this gives the immersive sensation of walking through a time lapse to an old world palazzo. The extensive ground floor holds the mansion’s commercial kitchen with wood burning oven, in-ground Roman bath, and main indoor sound stage with intimate dance floor. The ground floor lies half above ground, half below and is surrounded with windows on all sides. The stone foundation is exposed and contrasted with the brick of the building above, visually cut quite a swath. The floors are natural stone and the ceilings are highly polished Venetian plaster. Some of the second floor features include the hair and makeup room, expertly carved antique 19th century Italian walnut furnishings, Turkish handmade rugs, vintage polar bear taxidermy, a bathing room with a Juliet balcony and a clawfoot tub, two non functional fireplaces, large windows with great natural light on all sides. Another flight up is the attic floor. Portico windows line these white washed studios, featuring exposed beams and exposed brick walls, and original wide plank floors throughout. Also, a moorish influenced bathing room. Lastly, one short ladder up, is our roof level cupola. This intimate room lined in mahogany paneling has windows on all four sides. This provides 360 degrees of undisturbed views of the surrounding urban setting including Manhattan and Shooter’s Island on the Kill Van Kull, the New York and Newark Harbors, the Bayonne Bridge and the shorefront maritime industry. Once you close the exterior gate the entire perimeter of the property is walled in and obstructs any view from the outside creating a very private environment. The grounds include a 40ft x 20ft 12ft deep in-ground concrete swimming pool with diving board, an old stone water well, private garden spaces that include fruit trees, weeping willows, perennial garden, cobblestone paths, various hardscape areas in historical bluestone flags and brick pavers, artificial turf and natural turfed areas. A 68’ brick paved private driveway, 12 pet chickens with coop, and an outdoor Funktion One sound system. We also curate a prop house with a workshop, located next door. We can provide optional unique and antique furnishings for use on site during your shoot or event. Including, over 100 individual unique chairs and stools, crystal glassware, luxury dinner sets, and silverware, antique and unusual light fixtures. The Captain’s House is much more than your average peerspace listing. The owners have throughout history been and will continue to be in the process of creating something extraordinary. Over its long amazing past, the Captain’s House has served as a private residence, speakeasy, sailors boarding home, cabaret, spa, a school, a media production location, artists residence, a lucid dream. We are but another layer of stewards of this creative hub. Biagio and his wife were extremely eager to help and please us with whatever we needed for the shoot day. Great experience, we will definitely book this place again, since it has so much to work with.
Marissa E. booked a photoshoot for 60 people
Site manager Biagio and their team were beyond wonderful. There are truly not enough words to describe how happy we were with the space and everything that was included. I am a director, planner, and coordinator based in MI. I had the time of my life traveling to NY for the first time to expand my business and network in the wedding and fashion industry. Biagio, the venue owner described the location to the best of his power but sometimes words don’t do justice, you must see it in person to get the full effect of this unique venue. Truly a flashback into history with a modern twist of different styles and textures. Perfect location for any kind of production such as photoshoots for weddings, fashion, editorials, and more. Lots of props to choose from and a very helpful team to move around artifacts safely and timely. Plenty of free street parking – easy access to the location via car and a short walk from the bus stop. Thank you for letting us use your space. Cordiali saluti, M
Michael M. booked a film shoot for 19 people
A really really special location. The owner went above and beyond to make our project a reality. The place is great for period films but also for any modern day shoot you need with feeling. There are many different looks and many different eras you can make work. Also they have amazing props. One of the best locations out there in NYC. A hidden gem I suppose not to be so hidden anymore. Also very convenient to shoot in the neighborhood. Plenty of parking and easy access to the location.

Nicolas D. booked a production for 5 people
My peerspace experience with Suki and her team was nothing but exceptional. From the start Suki was jumping through loops while out of town to make everything happen for my booking. From day one setting foot on the location I was greeted by there property manager James. Who gave us a complete site tour the day before. Was fully prepared and walked us through. Also allowed us to give him any and all suggestion on room changes and what not and that he would take care of it before the day of the shoot. But the house being so incredible already, there wasn’t much to change. On shoot day, James was ready to go even though we were extremely early. He even helped us unload our gear as well as load our gear at the end of the day. I’ve been renting from Peerspace for a long time, specifically LA but I’ve never got a site manager like James as helpful and down to help us get that money shot at whatever it took. He’s was there and ready to assist at any demand we needed for the full day. To finish this off, the tight schedule we were on would not have been able to be completed without Jame’s helpfulness on site! I hope to rent this space out again, there space offers more rooms then I ever imagined. Thanks James and thanks Suki, you both were fantastic.
Thank you, we're on it!
