Setting up the surprise step-by-step<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Setting up a surprise and keeping it a secret from the person you\u2019re closest to can be a challenge. But it\u2019s also totally worth it, according to the couples we interviewed who did so. \u201cIf I could do it all over again,\u201d said John \u2014 whose surprise setup involved proposing at the end of Alexis\u2019s graduation party and then whisking her to the engagement party under the guise of a pre-planned friend meetup \u2014 \u201cI would.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But nailing down all those moving parts simply comes down to careful planning. At the highest level, you have several different options and opportunities to think through. Let\u2019s walk through them one by one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Decide what kind of surprise you\u2019re after<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

While the shape of your big day will depend on your cover story (more on that in just a second), there are two main options when it comes to planning a surprise engagement party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You could:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Host a surprise party honoring the engagement days, weeks, or months after the proposal itself, or<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. Combine the proposal and the party into one gigantic surprise, which is what both John and Charlie did<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    There\u2019s even the option to host a surprise engagement party that turns into a surprise wedding \u2014 though in many cases, the people who are surprised in that case are the guests<\/em> rather than the honored spouse. The proposed-to partner will probably want to have tight control over what they\u2019ll be wearing on their wedding day, which makes a true surprise hard to pull off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
