But today, more people have begun celebrating their accomplishments and embracing self-care, and many Americans now say they’re comfortable throwing their own parties.

Our new data shows that around half (49%) of Americans say they’re comfortable celebrating themselves — 20% of people even say they’re very comfortable with it. Along the way, people are discovering fresh excuses to celebrate—everything from breakups and divorce parties to finally paying off debt.

Celebrating yourself may seem vulnerable, but it definitely isn’t cringey. It’s a way to acknowledge your accomplishments and spend time with the people who helped you get there. Our survey shows how people are breaking the stigma of celebrating themselves and exactly how much they’re willing to spend to make it happen.

Key takeaways

Americans are far more generous with others than with themselves: The typical American is willing to spend more than double ($168) on a party for a friend compared to a party for themselves ($75).

People are nearly three times more likely to spend nothing on themselves than on someone else: 26% wouldn’t spend a dollar on their own celebration, compared to just 9% for a friend or loved one.

49% of U.S. adults say they’re comfortable celebrating themselves, like throwing a party for a personal milestone. Another 44% feel uncomfortable doing so.

People aren’t always as judgmental as we fear: 37% of people feel positive when they see other people throw parties or celebrations just for themselves. 25% don’t feel positive or negative, and only 9% of people feel negative.

While these aren’t traditional reasons to throw a party, 41% of people say paying off debt or reaching a financial goal deserves a self-celebration, while 29% say the same about getting through a tough time or breakup.

34% of people say entering a new chapter or experiencing a major change would motivate them to host a self-celebration, while 23% would be motivated by a desire to boost confidence or mental health.

Americans spend much less celebrating themselves than others

When it comes to opening their wallets, Americans show a striking contrast in their generosity. While we are happy to splurge on friends and family, we tend to tighten the purse strings when the guest of honor is us.

Based on our data, the median amount an American is willing to spend on a party for a friend or loved one is approximately $168. In stark contrast, the median amount they are willing to spend on a party for themselves is just $75—less than half the investment.

<picture> </picture>

<picture> </picture>

This hesitation to invest in oneself is visible across every budget level. 1 in 4 (26%) of Americans say they wouldn’t spend a single dollar ($0) on a party for themselves. Nearly one-third of Americans (30%) are willing to spend more than $250 on a friend or loved one’s party. In fact, the most common spending “sweet spot” for friends is between $101 and $250, whereas for self-celebrations, the majority of people cap their spending at $100 or less.

Most people don’t feel negatively about someone throwing a party for themself

Many Americans feel comfortable throwing their own parties, but it’s especially common among younger generations. Nearly two-thirds (62%) of Gen Zers, people ages 18-28, feel comfortable celebrating themselves, more than any other age group. Our survey shows only a slim percentage (9%) of people feel negatively when seeing other people throw parties or celebrations just for themselves. More often, 37% of people just feel positive.

Or, they don’t really care either way. One-quarter (25%) of people feel neutral about other people throwing parties or celebrations just for themselves and 24% have never really noticed or thought about it.

There’s also a subtle difference between men and women. Men are more likely than women (30% vs. 22%) to say they wouldn’t spend anything on a party for themselves, suggesting women are slightly more willing to put at least some money behind a self‑celebration.

Graduating, paying off debt, and overcoming challenges are all top reasons for a self-celebration

Traditionally, someone might throw a party for themselves to celebrate their birthday or a major accomplishment, like graduating from school. Those are still the most popular reasons to throw a self-celebration.

Nearly two-thirds (64%) of people say marking an educational milestone, such as with a graduation party, is deserving of a self-celebration, the most popular reason we suggested. Other practical — and popular — reasons are a significant birthday (55%) and landing a new job and/or receiving a promotion (48%).

But Americans are finding relatively new reasons to celebrate, too, often around emotional or financial wins. Nearly half (45%) of people say reaching a personal goal, such as hitting a fitness milestone or celebrating a creative project with a launch party, is deserving of a self celebration. Also, 41% of people cite paying off debt or reaching a financial goal is deserving of a self-celebration, 35% cite overcoming a personal fear or challenge, 29% cite getting through a tough time or breakup, and 20% cite leaving a job that wasn’t right for them.

<picture><source times as likely as baby boomers to say boosting their confidence and/or mental health would motivate them most to throw a self-celebration (35% compared to 10%). They’re also twice as likely to cite rewarding themselves for hard work or persistence and marking a new chapter and/or major change.

That self‑care mindset shows up in their budgets as well. Younger adults are more likely than baby boomers to say they’d be willing to spend over $250 on a party for themselves:

Gen Z = 28%

Millennials = 22%

Gen X = 18%

Baby boomers = 13%

This shows us that Gen Zers and millennials not only want to celebrate but are willing to meaningfully invest in those moments.

Rented venues are a popular spot for self-celebrations

Throwing a party for yourself doesn’t have to be the biggest bash of the year — 57% of people say, if they were to throw a party for themselves, they would have it at home.

However, there’s a sizable percentage of Americans who would go all-out for their celebration and rent a space: 23% would choose a private space in a restaurant or bar, 20% would choose a shared space in a restaurant or bar, and 14% would rent some other private venue.

Additionally, 24% would choose the outdoors, like a park or beach, and 11% would celebrate themselves while traveling or abroad.

Give your accomplishments the space they deserve with Peerspace

Whether you’ve accomplished a lifelong dream or whether you just want an excuse to dress up and get out of the house, a self-celebration is as worthy a reason as any to party.

When planning your next self-celebration, know you can use Peerspace as your party-hosting partner.
