Let&#8217;s review everything you need to know about how to shoot realistic images on green screen.<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How does green screen work?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Technically, it isn\u2019t green screen \u2014 it\u2019s called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.premiumbeat.com\/blog\/tips-shooting-blue-green-screen\/\">chroma-key photography<\/a>, and it works the same way with a blue screen. The reason that green became the industry standard is because it\u2019s a color that isn\u2019t often found in human clothing or skin tone. Thus, it\u2019s especially well-suited to be picked up by the camera\u2019s sensor, due to its high luminance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That makes it easy for photo-editing software to \u201ckey out\u201d the color and replace it with something else. A blue screen is also ideal for models with light-colored hair, since the hair can pick up a green tint, making the screen harder to key out later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Either way, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dpmag.com\/how-to\/tip-of-the-week\/dont-shoot-on-green-screen-12-2-13\/\">green screen<\/a> photography is <em>much<\/em> easier to shoot than green screen video. Since you\u2019re only working with a single image, you don\u2019t have to worry about removing the green from every single frame of video, which can be difficult if there\u2019s a lot of motion.<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to light for green screen<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The most important part of green screen photography is making sure your scene is lit correctly. Unlike with other kinds of photography, there isn\u2019t any leeway to get creative with shadows and other lighting tricks. You need to make sure that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.makeuseof.com\/tag\/add-any-green-screen-background-to-your-photos\/\">the screen is evenly lit<\/a> and that your subject is more brightly lit than the green screen. You should also remove any visible wrinkles in the screen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The further you can position your subject away from the screen, the better. Try to aim for around 10 feet. This way, you can light the subject and screen separately, and get the right amount of light for each part of the shot. That\u2019s why it\u2019s a good idea to get a large green screen, even if you\u2019re only doing medium shots or close-ups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some professional studios may already have green screen setups. Use as narrow an aperture as you can without affecting the focus, which is likely around f\/16 if you\u2019re shooting on a DSLR. For this, you can use Photoshop or a photo-editing program designed for green screen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are several different tools you can use to remove the green from your photograph. Start by selecting the background layer and deleting it. Then use the color range tool to remove any remaining green patches. If there\u2019s still some green left around the edges of your subject, use the lasso or magic wand tool to catch any stray pixels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, you can add in your background as a new layer. This is where you\u2019ll have to <a href=\"https:\/\/photography.tutsplus.com\/tutorials\/creating-realistic-composites-part-2-processing-and-compositing--photo-14515\">do the most work<\/a> to get it right. You can adjust the color tone and contrast to match the image, or use the brush tool to touch up any areas that don\u2019t look right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How much work you do here depends on how realistic you want your photo to appear. For a very stylized image, you may be able to get away with an exaggerated, more cartoon-y feel. For family portraits, you may want to go with something a little more realistic.<br><br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When to use a green screen<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A green screen shouldn\u2019t serve as a replacement for a color backdrop or an excuse to do everything in post-production. You still need to light your scene well \u2014 and, in fact, lighting for green screen is harder than lighting for a black or white background.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For most shoots, you\u2019ll most likely be better off using a standard backdrop with a natural color tone.
