According to Screenrant<\/a>, the town\u2019s name came from a real-life dinner that co-creator Eugene Levy had, where he and his friends imagined a \u201cbackwards\u201d small town with shops boasting names like \u201cSchitt Hardware\u201d. While the conversation originally mocked small towns, Levy later realized that this was the exact attitude they needed to avoid during the show. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead, Schitt\u2019s Creek<\/em> flipped the script on the stereotype of the \u201cbackwards\u201d small town. Most of the interior scenes for the show were filmed on soundstages throughout Toronto<\/a>, including Pinewood Toronto studios, Dufferin Gate Studios, and Revival Studios. But for outdoor scenes, constructed sets wouldn\u2019t do. To capture the quaintness of small-town North America, the creators needed a real small town to film in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After an extensive search throughout the United States and Canada, the creators ultimately settled on Goodwood, Ontario as their home base. According to CBC Canada<\/a>, Levy chose the town because it looked like \u201ca single intersection town\u201d that had a \u201cquaintness, timelessness, warmth and care for its people and properties.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some Good wood residents were initially skeptical about taking on the moniker Schitt\u2019s Creek<\/em>. However, they quickly came around once the cast and crew proved themselves to be polite, courteous, and supportive of the community. “It’s been an economic boost to Goodwood,” Dave Barton, mayor of Goodwood’s township of Uxbridge, told CBC Canada<\/a>. “There’s a real sense of pride and we’re very sad to see it go.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the show rose to international acclaim, the town has become a major tourist destination for fans, who sometimes call themselves the \u201cSchittheads,\u201d People from across the globe flock to locations like Bob’s Garage, Rose Apothecary, and the Cafe Tropical on Goodwood\u2019s main intersection. All this interest has been a huge boon for local businesses like Annina’s Bakeshop<\/a>, a local cafe on the same street as the three main Schitt\u2019s Creek<\/em> landmarks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It increased business but it also made it chaotic, especially this season,” Marco Cassano, owner of Annina\u2019s, said in an interview<\/a>. “But it was good for atmosphere, publicity, getting our name out there … So it was good all the way around for the economy”. Annina\u2019s bakeshop was even the set caterer for seasons 1-5 of Schitt\u2019s Creek and a favorite spot of the cast, who sometimes dropped in for a treat<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unlike other Schitt\u2019s Creek <\/em>landmarks, the motel that the Rose family initially bought as a joke isn\u2019t in Goodwood. The real-life Rosebud Motel resides in the town of Mono, Canada. And it can be yours if you\u2019ve got $1,600,000 to spare. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Known as the Hockley Motel, the property originally went on the market in March 2021. As of the time of writing, the motel is still for sale on Skyhub Canada<\/a>. With an asking price of 2 million CAD (approximately $1.6 million USD), the motel has over 4,500 square feet of space and 6.7 acres of land adjacent to the Nottawasaga River. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition to the 10-unit motel, the Hockley Motel also has a 2-story manager’s suite and a separate cottage on the property. All that\u2019s missing is the Rosebud motel sign! Listed as-is, the motel isn\u2019t currently in an operational state. But hey, this makes it an awesome opportunity for an ambitious buyer to put their own spin on the property. Elbridge Manor, the venue where David plans to marry Patrick, is actually Grayden Hall Manor<\/a> and is near Don Valley Park in Toronto. It\u2019s home to over 4 acres of beautiful formal gardens and is even a real-life wedding venue.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Herb Ertlinger Winery, where Moira was briefly spokesperson, is actually Applewood farms<\/a> in Stouffville. Sadly, you cannot buy a bottle of Moira Rose. However, you can enjoy the farm\u2019s delicious fruit wine and pick fresh produce during the spring and fall. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Blouse Barn, the shop where David worked during season 2, is a paint-your-own-pottery shop in Unionville, Ontario called Crock-a-Doodle<\/a>. You can schedule an event for your friends if you\u2019re in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
