1. Ask to see work that matches your brief, not their best work<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\nA highlight reel is the best work of a career. It is not a forecast of yours. Ask for three to five complete galleries that match your brief: the same type of event, in a similar venue, with a comparable number of people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Look at how they handle a full gallery rather than a hero image. Consistency across two hundred frames is a harder thing to fake than five good ones, and it is what you will actually receive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
2. Test their knowledge of London locations<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\nLondon has 33 borough film services, each with its own rules for its own patch. Check reviews somewhere other than their website<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\nA testimonial on someone\u2019s own website is there because they chose to put it there. Google, social media and booking platforms are harder to curate. Read them for the experience rather than the images: was the photographer easy to be around, were they on time, did they put people at ease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Most photographers here will take a call before you book. Take it. Chemistry is not a soft factor when someone is going to be six feet from your face for eight hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
5. Confirm the timeline for this market<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\nA Saturday in July is booked eighteen months out. A Tuesday in February is not. For weddings, work on 12 to 18 months, and longer if your date falls in peak season. Each permit covers one hour and a maximum of 10 people. Processing takes a minimum of 10 working days.<\/p>\n\n\n\nThe terms<\/a> are specific and worth reading before you plan anything. The fee is \u00a3100 plus VAT, so \u00a3120, and that covers one photographer only. You will need Public Liability Insurance with minimum cover of \u00a35,000,000 to apply, which your photographer should already hold. Only two groups are permitted in a park at any one time, so slots go. Confetti is not allowed, and no refunds are issued once a permit is granted.<\/p>\n\n\n\nThe City of London<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\nThe rules here depend on whose land you are standing on, and the distinction matters. On the public highway<\/a>, the City Corporation issues a Notice of No Objection for small, portable shoots where no equipment or traffic control licences are needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\nOn City Corporation private property, the rule is stricter: you must contact the Film Team, and that applies to all filming and photography regardless of crew size. Corporation property includes Tower Bridge, Millennium Bridge, London Bridge, Southwark Bridge, Blackfriars Bridge, the Monument, Guildhall, Leadenhall Market, the Old Bailey, the Barbican and most parks and gardens in the Square Mile. Filming on the bridges may carry a fee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One quirk worth knowing: Tower Bridge sits just outside the City\u2019s boundary but is owned by the Corporation, so a shoot on the bridge needs an application and a location fee. The land north of it is Tower Hamlets and the land south is Southwark, and most of the surrounding land is privately owned. Everything else about the weather here is a gamble you can only hedge. May to September gives you the longest days and the best odds. Major events to avoid<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\nLondon closes the exact streets you want to shoot on more often than you would think. Check the Visit London events calendar<\/a> before you fix a date, and plan around these:<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n- The London Marathon: <\/strong>the last Sunday in April. The route runs from Greenwich, over Tower Bridge, along the Embankment, through Parliament Square and up to The Mall, with roads shut from 4am until 8.30pm.
