Explore Washington DC bank locations for a film shoot

A bank is an iconic set for any film. It's a familiar place for the cast to advance the plot via a bank heist, conversation, or transaction. Banks can be small spaces with contemporary design elements, historic spaces with soaring ceilings, or something else entirely.
Washington, D.C. is one of the nation's oldest cities and you'll find banks here to fit any aesthetic. Yet, finding one for a film is not easy to do. Since banks deal with money the rules for filmmakers are quite strict. Your options are to either find a bank with film-friendly policies or book a professional filming location designed to look like a bank. Both approaches have their advantages.

Find film-friendly banks in Washington DC

Many banks in the DC area offer film-friendly policies. You'll need to fill out more paperwork and reserve your timetable well in advance. Weeks, if not months. You'll also need to work through the local police station to have an officer on site during filmmaking to ensure everything happening is legal. A film-friendly bank may also require you to work outside of regular business hours. This may affect how much natural light you have access to.
The flip side is that you'll have access to an authentic bank for your film, which is an asset, especially for historic or documentary films. That said, you'll find that many other companies with film-friendly policies can stand in for a bank. For example, the bank robbery scene in The Dark Knight (2008) was actually filmed at a post office, not a bank!

Discover bank film set locations in Washington DC

You can also film a bank scene inside of a set designed to look like a working bank. Many production companies in Washington, D.C. and other film-friendly cities keep standing sets with props for rent. Banks, hospitals, restaurants, and prisons are just a few sets that are prop-heavy and sometimes complicated to rent.
A bank film set, on the other hand, can be rented the day there is availability open and often in slots as small as by the hour. The design of the set caters to the needs of filmmakers, so you'll have power outlets and spots for lights set up in sensible, convenient places. You also have more freedom to move around furniture and other items inside of a bank set compared to an actual bank.
