A 4500 sq ft. eclectic, Gothic-Craftsman home designed in 1914 by the architect of the Palace of Fine Arts, Bernard Maybeck. Nestled among a grove of live oaks. A secluded enclave in a park-like setting in the Oakland Hills the house exudes an air of simplicity, elegance, and strength. In Rockridge, one mile from Rockridge BART, College Ave, shops and restaurants, 5 minutes from UC Berkeley, and near the Claremont Hotel. It has large lliving and dining rooms with wall sized windows that view the garden. Built of centuries-old redwood in pristine condition, the house is built with walls of windows and natural light, and affords total privacy surrounded by an acre of oaks and a maintained natural garden. It has been published in over 25 books and magazines, including the covers of House Beautiful, American Bungalow, and Preservation magazine. Designed by Bernard Maybeck, an American architect in the Arts and Crafts Movement of the early 20th century, who was an instructor at the University of California, Berkeley and a mentor for a number of other important California architects, including Julia Morgan and William Wurster. In 1951, he was awarded the Gold Medal of the American Institute of Architects. Maybeck developed a number of firm beliefs in how civilization and the land should relate to each other in particular the primacy of the landscape - geology, flora and fauna were not to be subdued by architecture so much as enhanced by the architecture. The home is furnished with local and international contemporary artists.
