THE STORE’s ground floor features a 1,300 sq. ft. loft-like interior space and a manicured outdoor courtyard of 600 sq. ft. We provide an intimate, light-filled environment that accommodates up to 49 people for a standing reception or 30 people seated in a classroom-style arrangement. The courtyard can be covered with a maximum tent size of 20ft. x 30ft. BUILDING HISTORY THE STORE was originally constructed ca. 1917 as a fresh market and corner grocery store in Raleigh’s first outlying suburb which is now known as the Glenwood-Brooklyn Historic District. The building is a corner landmark nestled in this a traditional, craftsman-style neighborhood which is now considered part of the city’s urban core. The “Nordan Grocery & Mart” opened in 1939 when Alexander and Myrtle Nordan bought the building from its original merchant and owner. The couple ran the market for decades and converted the rear of the building into their family apartment. Civic groups held meetings on the second floor, voting officials set up ballot boxes at the checkout counter, and teen-agers from Broughton High School sipped sodas on the sidewalk after school. According to Mr. Nordan, the store sold “everything and anything except whiskey,” until it closed for good in 1974. The heirs later leased out the family apartment until 1997 when the current proprietor, a local architect, became the building’s third owner. BUILDING CHARACTER The renovated exterior replicates the original look of the upper facade and the original corner entrance has been restored. However, the patch-worked street faces were redesigned to compliment the building’s original proportions. The post and beam interior is now a modern, 1,300 sq. ft. ground floor space that is lofty, flexible, light-filled and elegantly homey. Lounge and buffet areas are defined by floated platforms and furnished in soft-modern style. • The kitchen, featuring a long, stainless steel commercial sink unit enclosed in a low wall of concrete block, stands in for the old store’s penny candy counter. • A sleek cylindrical fireplace commands the central lounge area and plays on the image of a pot-bellied stove. • Storage cabinets act like open display cases, exposing a functional collection of neatly stacked provisions. • Street level windows are showcased to or obscured from the bordering sidewalk by translucent screens that glide along steel barn door tracks. The overall design is a chic, clean-lined homage to the former fresh market with wide-planked pine floors and a mixture of industrial elements.
