Have you ever been to an 'urban' island? This cottage is a mere 3 nautical miles off the coast of Portland, Maine. It's located on Peaks Island -- a neighborhood of Portland famous for simply 'drifting off to sea one day'. Our cottage 'About Time' was built in the early 1900s. It's being lovingly restored with what we call scandi-maine-ian / wabi sabi design. (Think: natural linen slipcovers, wool throw rugs, mid century modern furniture, and handmade wares from around the world). We moved here in 2019 after a career in global health, bringing influences to our space by way of China, India, sub-Saharan Africa, and prior home bases in Boston and Washington D.C. About Time has become our little refuge and place of peace. It always fills our cup up to spend time here, so we figured why not share it with others. *About the space* The cottage has an open concept first floor with big windows and peeks of Casco Bay. The kitchen has recently been renovated with modern appliances, vintage lighting and fixtures, porcelain sink, and butcher block countertops. It has a small island that can be moved around, with two wooden stools. The adjacent dining room comfortably seats 6 at a round table, with a small bar on wheels. There's a second Japanese style dining table in the living room with floor cushions for additional seating, alongside a linen sofa and Hans Wegner style rope chair. The upstairs includes a master bedroom, a guest bedroom with 2 twins, a bathroom with a vintage yellow tub, and a small study. You're welcome to use the wrap around porch or backyard as needed. *Logistics* Peaks Island is the most populated island in Casco Bay, Maine. It is part of the city of Portland and is approximately 3 miles from downtown. Simply take a 15 min ferry from Casco Bay Lines on Commercial St and walk off into a quiet, artistic, and coastal community. Our house is a 5 minute walk up the street. We're located in the 'downfront' neighborhood, meaning closer to the city and shopping area of cafes, stores, and the local library. There are three many ways to get here: 1) Drive your car over on the ferry. We recommend just arriving about 20-30 minutes before departure to secure your place in line. 2) Park in Portland and walk over on the ferry. Cars aren't really needed on the island, especially given how close the house is to the dock. 3) Take a boat taxi! These are our favorite -- especially in the summer. You can book them via Foggs Water Taxi and be at the house in roughly 10 minutes.
