Architectural Landmark 1953 Post and Beam Residence by Carl Maston, FAIA | Ray Kappe, FAIA

One of the first examples of "garden architecture" by mid-century innovator, Carl Maston. In a development of 25 homes by Maston, this is the first on this street to be restored. Several other homes on the block have original rock-roofs and recognizable 1950s features. It was created as a modular expression of custom lumber (2.5" x 5") with open beamed ceilings and exposed stacked red brick fireplace. The open floor plan with a partial height wall conceals the partially modernized galley kitchen with built-in breakfast banquette. Floor to ceiling windows with a 25' ribbon window span take on a commercial storefront character. A glass enclosed patio with three skylights and George Nelson pendant light defines a flex space with concrete floor. It hosts three bedrooms and two baths, both defined by original pink and white fixtures. Original hardwood flooring, cork flooring in the kitchen, with multiple exits and windows to purposefully connect interior to exterior. Reminiscent of Palm Springs, a bouldered desertscape with cacti adorns the front yard. The rear yard features a large pink flagstone patio with Weber grill, succulent garden backed by an ivy wall. Exterior architectural detailing contrasts the stucco wall facade with a striated redwood wainscoting, producing a contemplative zen side garden. Carport can be used as a convenient at grade staging space for rigging, lighting, covered wardrobe storage, with electrical access.
