New Sound Cafe was once home to a thriving west side gospel record shop in the 1970s. It closed in 2006 and was abandoned for 20 years before opening as a cafe in November 2025. We revived the name (it was called New Sound Gospel Records & Tapes), restored the old tile floors, and put the original storefront sign on display upstairs. It has a warm, vintage vibe with a fresh, modern twist.
The cafe is located in the Austin neighborhood on the west side of Chicago, across the street from a park and less than a block from the Oak Park community. Our space has two levels and an outdoor patio providing up to 3,000 square feet of space. Free street parking is available on Lake Street, and we are situated across the street from a bus stop and green line train station (Austin).
New Sound Cafe has been used for non-profit fundraisers, baby showers, album release parties, engagement parties, trunk parties, and more.
