About the Space

A steel-and-glass house by Alfred Newman Beadle, the architect who shaped much of Phoenix modernism — one of the last he designed, and one of the most unusual. The plan is a triangle, wedged into a hillside in North Central Phoenix and lifted above it, so the house reads as a sharp geometric object set against raw desert. Beadle called it the Hawk's Nest, for all the places in it you can stand and look out. The angles are the whole point. Because nothing in the plan is square, every room meets the view differently and no two setups look alike. Out the back, the view is to the striking raw rock face of the hillside. Out the front, the ground falls away toward Piestewa Peak and the downtown skyline. Light crosses the steel and glass all day and throws long triangular and circular shadows across the floors and walls. The sun and the full moon both rise over Piestewa, and in summer you get monsoon skies and the occasional haboob moving across the valley. About 1,873 sq ft: open living and dining under full-height glass, kitchen, two bedrooms, plus deck and a modern concrete circular spa and a fire pit. Compact, but it gives you far more frames than the square footage suggests — interiors, glass and steel detail, the rock face, the skyline, the desert exterior. The house also still has its original archival material on site, including the blueprints and Beadle's design model. A nice detail for design and architecture stories. These are handled by the owner only. Well suited to photo shoots, video, interviews, podcasts, product and brand campaigns, and editorial. Add-on — The art was staged by a local gallery owner who can swap pieces, take work down, or bring in a different look for your shoot — available on request for an additional fee, with advance notice. Vintage cars can also be brought in for the driveway or exterior shots, and a local photographer/videographer is available if you need one. All available on request for an additional fee, with advance notice. This is a hillside property with a steep driveway, and stairs lead to the main level. Two options: a spiral staircase to the front entrance, and a wider back staircase through the yard that's easier for larger gear. Small crews only, with the owner or a representative on site. No events or parties.
