Where to find a great interview backdrop

Whether you're looking for artificial interview backdrops or actual real-life background scenery, you can search for ideal interview video locations right here on Peerspace. You buy drop cloth-style interview backdrops online and from photography equipment suppliers, though they tend to be expensive for something of a decent size and made from a quality material. You want a backdrop heavy enough not to wrinkle easily, as well as something non-reflective. It's even easier—and possibly cheaper, to boot—to find a great interview backdrop by simply renting some time at a professional video production studio. Video studios often have a variety of backdrops you can use, so you can try out several options and see what works for you.

How to film an interview

When filming an interview, focus on lighting, depth of field, and sound. Your interview filming space should ideally be on the larger side, be able to hold your lighting equipment, and be free of background and ambient noise. Peerspace is loaded with hand-picked locations near you that are perfect for filming interviews. Set up your lights using a classic portrait setup, and leave space between your subject and the background, so you can get a nice blur—this keeps the attention on the person being interviewed. Finally, use a lavalier microphone or a boom mic to ensure you get good audio.

What's the ideal interview camera setup?

There's a lot of freedom in shooting interviews since interview subjects remain in one place, which removes some shutter speed and stability considerations. Any camera capable of shooting sufficiently high-resolution video will work well for interview, but the ideal interview camera setup will also make use of a fast, fairly long lens. Focal lengths like 50mm and 85mm are popular for this purpose. Choose a beautiful filmed interview venue that gives you some space to work, since if you're working with prime lenses, you may need to put some distance between the camera and the subject, and in general, you'll want some distance between the subject and the background.

What's the ideal interview lighting setup?

A variety of classic portrait lighting arrangements work well for interviews, but the primary thing to keep in mind is that your subject should be lit softly, with no harsh shadows. Ring lights are often used as key lights for this purpose, paired with a soft, diffused fill light, often using a softbox. The perfect professional setup will also utilize a backlight to either eliminate shadows from the background or positioned above and behind the subject to accentuate their frame. When using natural light, putting your subject beside a large open window can work well to cast a soft, understated light, which can be modified with artificial light. Many incredible filmed interview venues available for rent will include the use of professional lighting equipment for this purpose.

How much does an interview space cost to rent?

Interview spaces average $150 per hour to rent, but it’s easy to spend less or more depending on what you’re looking for. For a space on the smaller side, expect to spend closer to $166, whereas larger venues run about $159 per hour.
