A LinkedIn headshot and an actor’s casting set both count as portrait photography, but they call for different photographers. The headshot needs a background that will sit well on a company website. The casting set has to meet Spotlight’s standards.
We looked at portrait photographers working in Liverpool and picked five whose prices and client work we could check against a source. All five work from the city, with studios from Kirkdale and Wood Street to the edge of the Georgian Quarter, and four of them publish their prices.
How we created our list
Our goal is to connect you with photographers who have a proven track record of excellence and reliability. We vetted the best photographers based on a set of criteria:
- Portfolio depth: We look at the full body of work behind each photographer, not just a handful of standout images, to get a true sense of consistency and skill.
- Client reviews across multiple platforms: We analyze feedback from clients on Google, popular booking platforms, and social media to ensure consistent satisfaction.
- Industry recognition and awards: We look for photographers with accolades from respected organizations and industry bodies relevant to their specialty, whether that’s weddings, commercial work, or beyond.
- Professional credentials and associations: Active membership in industry groups, relevant certifications, and verified business operations, including appropriate insurance for working in the city, are often held by our photographers.
Best portrait photographers in Liverpool
1. Leon Britton Photography

Photographer: Leon Britton, with a studio at The Secret Warehouse in Kirkdale, north Liverpool
Speciality: Studio headshots and portraits, including actor headshots, dating profile photos and personal branding, plus workplace headshots, weddings and events.
Notable work: Leon is an Associate of the Royal Photographic Society. He holds a first-class degree in Digital Imaging and Photography and an MSc with Distinction in Digital Marketing Communications, both from the University of Central Lancashire. He has photographed for Liverpool Chamber of Commerce, Sefton Council, the University of Liverpool, the Royal College of Physicians, the Royal Academy of Engineering, QVC and Specsavers. He has more than 180 five-star Google reviews.
Pricing: Studio headshots start at £150 for a two-hour session with four retouched images. Portrait sessions start at £175 on the same terms, with time to try different looks and backgrounds. Dating profile shoots start at £200, and personal branding is £500 for a six-hour session with 15 retouched images. He is not VAT registered, so the price quoted is the price you pay.
Why we rate him: A two-hour slot for an entry-level headshot leaves time to relax in front of the camera, which most people need. He pairs a photography degree with a marketing MSc, a useful mix when a headshot has to work on LinkedIn.

2. Xposure Studios

Photographer: Fiona Walker and the Xposure team, at the Tea Factory on Wood Street in Liverpool city centre
Speciality: Newborn, maternity, cake smash and family portraits through its Peekaboo brand, and makeover, boudoir, bridal and corporate headshot sessions at Xposure.
Notable work: Xposure has been based in Liverpool city centre since 2012. Fiona is the studio’s director and one of its photographers, and every newborn session is led by a female photographer. After the shoot, families watch their images on a cinema-style projector screen and choose the package they want on the day.
Pricing: The newborn session fee is £95 and includes refreshments, the viewing and a complimentary 12 x 8 print. Image packages start at £745 for Bronze, with 10 digital images and a 20 x 16 art block, and run to £1,495 for Platinum, with 25 digital images, three frames and a slideshow. Interest-free payment plans over three to nine months are available, subject to a credit check and a 25% deposit on the day. NHS staff receive 10% off packages. Corporate headshots are £95 for a session of up to 45 minutes with two digital images, and image packages run from £295 to £595.
Why we rate them: The viewing on a big screen turns choosing photos into part of the experience, and a family sees every image before choosing a package. The headshot service makes the same studio useful for a quick professional portrait.

3. Matt Thomas

Photographer: Matt Thomas, from the Wirral and working out of the Royal Liver Building on Liverpool’s waterfront
Speciality: Natural portraits and headshots for organisations and brands, alongside lifestyle, interiors, drone photography and film.
Notable work: Matt has been commissioned by Google, Braun, GQ Magazine, Marks and Spencer, the BBC, easyJet, Bosch and Liverpool Football Club. For a Google Pixel 9 advert with Liverpool FC he shot the stills and behind-the-scenes photography. Liverpool John Moores University has used him as its freelance photographer and videographer for around ten years, for staff portraits, graduations, public lectures and recruitment campaigns.
Pricing: Quoted on enquiry.
Why we rate him: Clients at Rankin and Study Group describe how quickly he puts people at ease, which matters when the subject is a member of staff rather than a model. He suits organisations that need portraits of real people in their own workplace.

4. Joe Bramall Photography

Photographer: Joe Bramall, with a studio on Roscoe Lane in Liverpool city centre
Speciality: Actor and performer headshots, business portraits and personal branding, in the studio or on location, plus on-site team headshots.
Notable work: Joe has more than a decade of portrait experience and is an associate member of Headshots Matter, an international network of headshot photographers. His actor clients include students and graduates of LIPA and LMA, and he has photographed nine actors from The Black Actors Collective. His corporate clients include Philips Health and Hippo Digital, and he covers team days across the North West, Manchester and London.
Pricing: A studio session is £150, or £120 for students, and gives you the studio for up to half a day. Images are then £50 each, chosen after the shoot, and he sells no packages. Team headshot days are £1,200 for up to 12 people at one location, with each extra person at £90.
Why we rate him: Paying per image means an actor leaves with exactly the shots they will use. Actor headshots are framed to Spotlight’s standards, with black and white versions at no extra cost.

5. The Portfolio People

Photographers: Izzy and Henry, at Toxteth TV on Windsor Street, on the edge of the Georgian Quarter
Speciality: Headshots, portraits and video vocal reels for actors, singers, dancers and other performers.
Notable work: Izzy is a headshot and portrait photographer, and Henry is a musical director, producer and videographer. Both have worked professionally in theatre and entertainment. Their studio covers 1,000 sq ft with natural light and a hair and makeup station, so a performer can refresh headshots and a vocal reel in one day. The reels cut four songs into a 4K video with studio-grade vocal production.
Pricing: An express headshot session is £125 for one hour with one retouched image. A headshot session is £245 (£225 for students) for two hours with four retouched images, and a portrait session is £295 (£275 for students) for three hours with six retouched images. The Portfolio Package adds a vocal reel to a headshot session for £495 (£475 for students), and the Premium Portfolio Package adds one to a portrait session for £545 (£525 for students). Extra edits are £20 each.
Why we rate them: A photographer and a musical director under one roof means a performer’s headshots and vocal reel are made by people who know what casting teams look for. Student prices on every session help drama school students build a first portfolio.

Finding the right portrait photographer

A portrait photographer’s portfolio shows you their style. It does not tell you how many images you will take home, or how long you will wait for them.
1. Be clear about the purpose
A LinkedIn headshot and a newborn portrait need different approaches. Look at work that matches yours.
2. Count the retouched images
Leon Britton and The Portfolio People include a set number of retouched images in each session. Joe Bramall charges per image, and Xposure sells images in packages after the shoot. Work out what you will pay for the number of images you need.
3. Ask how long the session lasts
A longer session gives you time to relax and change outfits. Leon Britton’s headshot sessions run for two hours, and Joe Bramall gives you the studio for up to half a day.
4. Think about studio or location
A studio gives you controlled light and clean backgrounds. A location such as the waterfront or the Baltic Triangle adds character.
5. Plan your outfits
Bring a few options in plain colours that suit you. Your photographer will tell you what works best on camera.
