As a major culture and entertainment hub, Las Vegas is one of the most film-friendly cities in the country. Businesses across town are accommodating to movie makers in need of a filming location. Historic hotels, glittering casinos, rooftop skyscraper lounges…You have everything you need for a story set in Sin City. But what if your story includes a prison scene?
Prisons are one of the most difficult sets to accommodate. They require a lot of props; barred doors, sleeping bunks, concrete walls, and other authentic elements are hard to come by, not to mention interrogation rooms and other additions. Your choices include building your own prison set, which is time-intensive and expensive. You could work with an actual working prison as well or you can rent time at a set designed to look like a prison!

Of the three options, prison sets in Las Vegas are the most convenient. Production studios usually have several spaces on hand that replicate prop-intensive settings. Hospitals, prisons, and restaurants are a few of the most common sets for filmmakers to rent. Las Vegas prison sets include extra rooms like phone walls or line up walls, not to mention props like handcuffs, jumpsuits, and guard uniforms.
Prison sets are rented by the hour, making them flexible and affordable options. Unlike a true working prison, you can have a prison set booked as soon as the next day if there's space available!

For the most authentic prison atmosphere, there's no substitute for an actual prison in Las Vegas. Working prisons have dozens of cells to work with, prison yards, interrogation rooms, shower rooms, and other amenities. The flip side is that they will be more difficult to book. You'll have legal hurdles to overcome and won't have access to the entire facility due to security concerns. Booking a film-friendly prison takes weeks or months of negotiating. But there's no better venue for a prison movie, especially if there are documentary elements and you want to work at the exact same prison your film is set in.
Some former prisons are now film-friendly venues, however. The North Las Vegas Detention Center closed its doors to inmates in 2012 and sits vacant. It's been featured in short films like "Next to Me" in 2018 and remains open to filmmakers looking for an authentic set.
