Get ready, you’re about to be awed by the work of some of the best Detroit cityscape photographers. The skyline of Motor City is one of the most recognizable in the United States. Its rich history can be read with a glance at the many historic buildings peppering the view.
Small wonder there are so many talented Detroit cityscape photographers here, most of whom are locals aspiring to help viewers better feel and understand what it means to live there!
1. Eric Jackson
Born and raised in Detroit, Eric Jackson is just the right guide to start our cityscape tour! He creates products, corporate headshots, and fine art images as a commercial artist. Whether he’s crafting a photo for a client or himself, Eric is very attuned to the mood of the image. He sees a successful shot as one that helps you feel as he did when viewing a beautiful subject.
As Eric shares in his own words: “As a photographer, I want my images to have the ability to create an environment in which the subject, be it a scape, product or person, stands out and shines. It is my hope that viewers truly enjoy the images, as much as I do when creating them.”
2. Andrew Dean
Even for a Detroit cityscape photographer, Andrew Dean is in love with the details! He takes us not only into the heart of the city core. But also outside of it, where Great Lakes ships, urban decay, lighthouses, and nature remind us that there is much more to Detroit.
Andrew also explores several compositional and editing styles. Monochrome allows us to better appreciate a scene’s lines, form, and details free of color. While his color photography influences the mood of a scene. Summer images feel radiant and warm, while winter can feel moody and quiet when shot in color!
3. Charles Falsetti
No list of the top Detroit cityscape photographers would be complete without Charles Falsetti. He was born and raised here, giving him a native’s perspective on what stories there are to tell! Photography is one of the best storytelling mediums there are. Its ability to connect people, places, and things makes it a very flexible genre.
Especially for a natural storyteller like Charles. As he shares in his own words: “I have the urge to tell stories, give people new perspectives and ways of seeing the world.” Detroit often has a reputation for being a city on the decline. A rust belt metropolis well past its expiration point. Yet looking at Charles’ work makes it obvious that the city is very much alive and thriving! Just waiting for you to come and take a closer look.
4. Metro Detroiter
Metro Detroiter is the place to visit if you’re looking for an uplifting fine art image of your home city! Their collection includes well-known streets, views, and places only a local would truly appreciate.
We are really impressed by the architectural diversity that Metro Detroiter has to share with us. Niche coffee shops, botanical gardens, murals, skyscrapers…Local eyes have a way of teasing out details that even experienced visiting Detroit cityscape photographers can miss.
5. Will Strieff
Will Strieff’s collection of work is a vision of the world through his camera lens. As scenic as Detroit is, we think you’re going to love Will’s vision from above. By using aerial drone-based cameras, he shares a view few ever get to appreciate.
The city in winter also finds its expression in Will’s images. Falling snow, cracking ice, and white streets! At ground level, Will takes to the streets, sharing what it’s like to move among the people of Detroit as they walk, protest, and live in the Motor City.
6. Joey D.
Joey D. is a Detroit cityscape photographer whose love of the genre takes viewers on a diverse ride! His images showcase the city from above as often as from the ground. In the air, we can truly appreciate the radial spokes of the streets of downtown. The glitter of neon lights as the sunsets and the historic buildings sprinkled across the skyline.
Joey’s style is contrast-rich and makes good use of split toning techniques. And while he often shares architectural narratives, Joey also includes the human perspective from time to time, giving us a look at what the people who made Detroit do as they live, laugh, and love.
Detroit natives will also enjoy how Joey captures the city through all of its seasons. We all love scenes of summer sunshine, but no vision of the area would be complete without the soft gray, blues, and whites of Detroit in winter!
7. Cole Whitney of Chromatic Streets
Chromatic Street is the special project of Cole Whitney. He’s out to explore Detroit’s buildings, people, and stories. As a street photographer, the cityscape is a constantly evolving backdrop for him to reveal his subjects.
Cole’s perspective is human-centric as a result. Detroit’s skyline is shared from a perspective that’s close to how we would enjoy it from the streets, and people regularly find their place in his work. We especially love when Cole takes to the streets at night. He delights us by using subtle lighting, shadowy building lines, and well-timed moments.
8. Haaris Adel
Haaris Adel has one of the finest cityscape collections we’ve come across. His work explores Detroit from every possible angle. From the streets, where bridges and skyscrapers soar overhead. Through windows for creative lens flare and scenic sunsets. And even from above, where we can truly appreciate the scale of the Motor City!
Haaris has a moodier style than many other Detroit cityscape photographers. Matte profiles contrast interestingly when paired with saturated color profiles and contrast. He’s also no stranger to nighttime cityscapes, where flashing neon lights and dark skies reveal an entirely new side to Detroit!
