From Blank Canvas to Mystic Disco: How One London Creative Brought His Dream Party to Life

With handmade celestial decor, glittering costumes, live entertainment, and a whole lot of imagination, Denis transformed an East London Peerspace into a mystical disco wonderland. Here’s how he made it happen.

Some people throw parties, while others create entire worlds for their guests to step into. Denis belongs firmly in the latter category.

A self-proclaimed lover of immersive parties, elaborate costumes, and anything that sparkles, the London-based creative and Peerspace employee has a knack for turning ordinary gatherings into extraordinary experiences. His portfolio of celebrations includes an underwater-inspired soirée complete with mermaids and sailors, a medieval-themed bash, a carnival-meets-cabaret extravaganza, and a Marie Antoinette-inspired birthday party featuring mountains of cakes.

His latest party was themed Mystic Disco, a celestial celebration where Studio 54 met the mystical world of tarot, complete with handmade golden moons, shimmering tinsel, a live electric violinist, and enough glitter to rival a disco ball.

The event took place inside a blank-canvas warehouse studio he discovered on Peerspace. But before the first guest arrived, there was an entire universe to create.

The art of throwing a party people will remember

For Denis, hosting has always been about more than bringing people together over food and drinks. It’s about giving them somewhere to escape, even if only for an evening.

“I think it’s important to gather people, even just for a few hours, so they can escape from everything, have fun, and forget about the world,” he says. “It’s less about being the center of attention and more about creating an atmosphere where everyone can shine. I think we never have enough sparkle in our lives.”

The idea for Mystic Disco came at the end of summer, when his friends, many of whom are expats living in London, were returning from travels and visits home. In France, there’s a word for this time of year: la rentrée, the return to routine after summer.

Denis saw it as the perfect excuse to reunite his friends. And what better way to shake off the back-to-school blues than with a little sparkle?

But first, find your blank canvas…

Every great party begins with the space. For Denis, that somewhere needed to have plenty of room for imagination.

When searching for a venue, his checklist was relatively simple: somewhere he could bring his own DJ, food, and drinks, and most importantly, a space he could transform into something entirely his own. Denis discovered U24 Studios, a warehouse space in East London.

“What I love about this space is that literally it’s a blank canvas, so it was just perfect for me.”

Half Studio 54, half celestial magic

Imagine stepping into a room where golden moons shimmer overhead, mystical eyes watch from the walls, and disco lights dance across a sea of silver tinsel (77 meters, to be exact). That was the world Denis envisioned.

Inspired by the decadence of Studio 54, celestial imagery, and the mysterious allure of tarot, Mystic Disco was designed to be glamorous, fantastical, and just a little surreal.

“If I could invite someone from the disco era to my party, it would be Andy Warhol.”

Rather than relying on only store-bought decorations, Denis handcrafted much of the party decor himself—including elaborate costumes and accessories—from oversized celestial suns and mystical eyes to an elaborate golden moon.

“I wanted something where people escape. I want things to shine. I want people to escape somewhere.”

“I wanted the room to look like a disco ball vomited everywhere.”

As for the dress code, many of these friends have attended his parties for over 15 years, so they know the drill: when Denis says dress up, you dress up.

The secret ingredient: a little wind

One of Denis’s most thoughtful party details wasn’t something most guests would immediately notice. It was the fans.

To create the illusion of an ever-moving, shimmering environment, he positioned fans to make the hanging tinsel sway and catch the light.

“When I’m in front of a mirror, when I think that I’m Beyoncé or whatever, or Kylie Minogue, I need some wind! And because I don’t have long hair, I should have the tinsel.”

The result was a room that felt alive, even when guests weren’t on the dance floor.

Denis recalls seeing a video from the night in which someone marveled at the effect, pointing out how beautiful everything looked with the decorations in motion. It was proof that even the smallest details can make a big difference.

Setting the stage for an unforgettable night

Of course, an immersive party needs more than an incredible backdrop. To bring Mystic Disco to life, Denis assembled a lineup of entertainment with a little help from his talented friends.

Pietro, his longtime friend and go-to DJ, was behind the music. Ornelia, a dancer, singer, and electric violinist, provided live entertainment. And Marie, a tarot card reader, added a fitting dose of mystery with readings for the guests.

Even the soundtrack followed a carefully considered progression.

Denis likes his parties to build gradually, starting with lounge music before transitioning into dancing and, eventually, a full-blown singalong.

By the end of the night, the playlist had made its way to Madonna and Céline Dion, with the entire room belting out familiar favorites.

The magic doesn’t disappear when the party ends

For all the elaborate costumes, handmade details, and carefully orchestrated entertainment, Denis’s favorite part of Mystic Disco wasn’t any single decoration or performance. Seeing the world he’d imagined in his head become real, and watching his friends lose themselves in it, was exactly why he loves creating experiences in the first place.

“It’s always good to create something that is very ephemeral, in the sense that it’s gonna disappear in a few hours, but it stays in people’s minds.” Perhaps that’s the real magic of a great party.

For a few hours, an ordinary production studio in East London became a shimmering, mystical disco. Then, almost as quickly as it appeared, that world disappeared.

The decorations came down, the music stopped, and the studio returned to being a blank canvas, ready for someone else’s imagination. But the memories? Those are sticking around.

As Denis perfectly puts it:

“The best parties always give you flashbacks in the future.”
