Frequently Asked Questions

Recitals are intimate concerts where a single instrumentalist, singer, or a small group gives a performance. A recital audience can be of any size so you can hold one in any venue with the right acoustic properties. Are you planning a recital in Philadelphia for a high school chorus? Or maybe you're looking for an underground concert venue for a poetry reading night? You'll find recital venues of all sizes here in the City of Brotherly Love!
One of the most important aspects to a great recital space is the acoustic qualities. If you have a solo performer the venue should be small enough for sound to carry throughout it. Or you'll need amplification in the form of speakers, microphones, and other audio-visual enhancements. Fortunately, most recital venues take this into consideration when booking performance-based events.
Private recital spaces offer intimacy by blocking out distracting sounds from outside so the performance is all you hear. They are also exclusive venues, keeping the space reserved for your chosen recital audience. If your recital isn't open to the general public, consider universities, high schools, and theaters for private performances. Educational institutions offer performance spaces for rent at affordable rates with flexible terms.
You can also hold a recital in a community center, church meeting room, or other space. The intimacy of a smaller venue makes up for the lack of acoustic perfection a true theater or auditorium offers. If your recital is for a larger audience, however, there's no substitute for a performance hall with good acoustics. Fortunately, Philadelphia offers world-class venues for recitals of all kinds.
For a subtly lit classic recital hall, check out Terra Hall at the University of the Arts! It offers 22,000 square feet of performance space with seating for 140 guests in the recital hall and 100 in the black box theater. Terra Hall also includes a green room, dressing room, and state of the art audio-visual equipment to record your recital performance!
Larger recitals where you expect an audience of hundreds of people can be held at Verizon Hall on South Broad St. Home to the Philadelphia Orchestra, it has space for up to 2,500 audience members to enjoy the performance. Easily accessible via public transportation, Verizon Hall is also located close to hotels, restaurants, museums, and other must-see aspects of downtown Philadelphia!
