A House Inspired by Skyrocketing Real Estate Prices: Tour This Month’s Wow Space
Architecture is the study of where form meets function. In this month’s Wow Space, form meets a problem-solving function in Full House, a modern, award-winning residence nestled in the heart of Vancouver.
Skyrocketing real estate prices and a rising number of adult children choosing to live with their parents inspired Michael Leckie and his design firm, Leckie Studio Architecture + Design, to dream up a multi-generational housing prototype designed for families to grow, adapt, and thrive. The result? An open, contemporary home full of natural light and flexible living quarters, perfect for hosting gatherings with loved ones and staging bright, airy photoshoots.
Full House offers both private and communal areas throughout the residence. An atrium filled with trees and other plants runs through the middle of the home, offering a natural barrier between living quarters. Described as an “indoor forest”, this atrium is inspired by biophilic design – focused on increasing occupant connectivity to the natural environment.
Two large outdoor areas inspire a sense of community in the home, making it perfect for guests planning gatherings. The stunning rooftop offers sprawling views of the charming neighborhood of Kitsilano, and includes a long community table, ideal for unforgettable dinners on summer nights. Just below is an expansive wooden deck overlooking a spacious courtyard.
While the outside of the home is show-stopping, the interior design also boasts incredibly sophisticated style. Inspired by minimalism, every corner of Full House is its own cozy oasis. Daylight pours in from every angle, light bouncing off the creamy neutral palette and black metalwork.
This aesthetic has drawn the eye of many brands for social media campaigns – including WILET, Saltyface, and Dolce Magazine (hello, Michael Bublé!) – as well as the eyes of prestigious architects throughout Canada. The house has won a number of prestigious architecture and design awards, including:
2022 / International Contemporary Furniture Fair / ICFF Interior Award / Residential
2021 / AFBC / Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia Award in Architecture
2021 / AFBC / Design Excellence Award / Single Family Residential
2021 / Gray Awards / Residential Architecture / Finalist
2019 / Architizer A+ Awards / Residential Unbuilt Private House / Jury Winner
2017 / Canadian Architect / Award of Excellence
“We used the space to host an intimate launch event, inviting local Vancouver creators. It could not have been a more ideal space for our event. The backyard let in the most gorgeous evening light for photos and videos and the main talk of the event was how stunning the space was.”
