What is “Letterkenny”?

Letterkenny is a sitcom depicting a place that doesn’t traditionally get a lot of screentime – rural Canada.

Originally a web series called “Letterkenny Problems”, the show revolves around a small Canadian town with the same name. Letterkenny focuses on Wayne and Katy, a brother-sister duo who run a small farm with the help of Wayne’s friends, Daryl and Squirrely Dan.

The show was loosely based on series creator Jared Keeso’s life growing up in Listowel, Ontario. Letterkenny’s authentic portrayal of rural Canadian life is one of the key reasons the show resonates so hard with fans. Even if it isn’t always flattering, it’s always hilarious. And while the Town of Letterkenny itself is fictional, the show’s creators filmed it on location in a real Canadian small town.

The majority of Letterkenny is filmed in Sudbury, Ontario. Sudbury is a picturesque town with rolling hills, open fields, and placid lakes. Its quiet, small-town vibe made it the perfect stand-in for the community of Letterkenny.

“You won’t find nicer people than the people in the city of Sudbury,” said Keeso in an interview with The Spec. “[Sudbury] is a place that we’re lucky to be, you know, people are incredible there.”

Here are some of the key Letterkenny filming locations you might recognize around Sudbury.

Wayne and Katy’s farm is located at 1546 Cote Boulevard in Sudbury, Ontario. The farm is owned by a local family and operates as a farm equipment supplier. It’s also an excellent place to do some chorin’ with your good buddies.

While it’s all right to take a picture from the road, the farm is private property. Fans should refrain from wandering onto the property without permission.

MoDean’s Roadhouse

MoDean’s Roadhouse is the local bar where the characters of Letterkenny go for a drink. It’s also notoriously prone to catching fire. As it turns out, there’s a real-life explanation for why MoDean’s keeps changing location.

According to The Cinemaholic, Sudbury’s Frood Hotel serves as MoDean’s roadhouse for filming during season 1. The bar went out of business after season 1 and was no longer available for filming. So, the show decided to write the bar out of the show as having burned down.

MoDean’s II was filmed at the Fusions Bar and Restaurant in Chelmsford, Ontario. Unfortunately, this bar also shut its doors, prompting another fire incident in the script. It’s unclear where the current filming location for MoDean’s is, but hopefully, the fires will stay a thing of the past.

Letterkenny’s hockey arena, also known as “the barn”, is the Gerry McCrory Countryside Sports Complex in Sudbury. They filmed some on-ice scenes at other locations in Greater Sudbury, such as the Capreol Community Centre and Arena.

In September 2021, the Sudbury Star reported that the City of Greater Sudbury authorized a three-year lease on the Capreol Community Center with the producers of Letterkenny. Hopefully, this means that Letterheads can look forward to more scenes on the ice in future seasons!

The Letterkenny Agricultural Hall, or the Ag Hall, is the Dr. Edgar Leclair Community Centre and Arena in Sudbury. Interestingly, the community center is also home to an ice rink. But it doesn’t appear that they filmed any on-ice scenes here.

The ice is available for both public skating sessions and private rentals if you want to pay it a visit. Who knows, maybe you’ll even bump into a member of the Letterkenny Irish.

Letterkenny gave back to its inspiration

Since creator Keeso’s life in Listowel, Ontario, serves as inspiration for Letterkenny, it was only fitting that the show gave back to the town that started it all.

According to The Hamilton Spectator, show creator Jared Keeso brought the ‘Letterkenny Live’ tour to Listowel to raise money for the town’s new hockey arena. According to Keeso, the show is popular in his old hometown.

“I’d like to say that the biggest ‘Letterkenny’ fans on the planet earth are in Listowel,” says Keeso. “I’ve got a ton of friends back home in Listowel and get back often as I can. You know, sometimes when other towns play the Jr. B Team, they’ll say they’re playing Letterkenny. That’s pretty cool.”
