Part of what makes the setting and summer romance of Noah and Allie for “The Notebook” so romantic and thrilling is the gorgeous South Carolina backdrop. The run-down and dilapidated home by the water that Noah winds up purchasing and fixing up becomes a running theme throughout the film and even somewhat of a character in its own right.

Ryan Gosling’s Noah and Rachel McAdams’ Allie are two young lovers who meet while Allie is in town for summer. They come from very different backgrounds: Allie from a wealthy family and Noah from the working class. This leads to inevitable tension when Allie’s parents don’t approve of the relationship.

While they are together, Noah takes Allie to an old house, telling her he wants to buy and repair it someday. The two star-crossed lovers become separated, but Noah buys the house regardless and repairs it. This home eventually brings the two back together for the kiss that audiences couldn’t get enough of!

With it getting so much screen time you may have been wondering to yourself, “Where is the house from ‘The Notebook’?” Like many great films, the filmmakers shot on location in South Carolina. For “The Notebook,” this was on Wadmalaw Island.

The home on Martin’s Point Plantation looked genuinely rundown in the movie. However, according to an article on Sciway, the filmmakers decided to take another approach. “The filmmakers had considered finding a dilapidated house to film which they could then renovate as the narrative progressed. In the end, however, they settled on using a beautiful house they could make look run down for the film’s earlier scenes”. With a little bit of movie magic, it really does seem like the production made an old house come back to life.

Can you rent the house from “The Notebook”?

What about the beautiful plantation home that Annie’s wealthy family owns? You may have been watching the film and wondered to yourself after seeing this amazing property, “Where is the house from ‘The Notebook’?”

It turns out that the exterior shots of the Hamilton’s mansion were also shot in South Carolina at the Boone Hall Plantation. Unlike the previous property, this one is actually open to the public so you can see it for yourself. According to an article in Southern Living: “Scenes of the exterior of Allie’s family’s summer house were filmed at the iconic Boone Hall Plantation in Mount Pleasant. The plantation, which has been a working farm for more than 300 years, is open to the public for tours—you’ll recognize it instantly upon turning on to the mossy oak-lined driveway and seeing the iron gate in front of the house that Noah rams his truck into.”

It’s unknown whether you’re allowed to do any filming and photography inside of the Boone Hall Plantation. However. there are plenty of other options through Peerspace, like this Greek Revival Southern Plantation in Cochran, Georgia. This home has the kind of authentic Southern charm that would be no stranger to the characters from the movie.

From the owner: “Built in 1895, kept in exceptional condition, this home is a spectacular location for jaw-dropping film and photography productions inside and out. Beautifully landscaped grounds, with period farm-style buildings scattered over the property, as well as horse stables and paddocks.”
