A Guide To Los Angeles Party Venues

It’s hard to imagine a city that’s better for parties than Los Angeles, home to the glitz and glam of Hollywood and the central hub for the U.S. entertainment industry for more than a century. Part of the reason for LA’s thriving nightlife is the fact that the city has warm, sunny weather all year round, unlike many other cities, which means there are tons of outdoor party venues like rooftop bars and venues with pools to enjoy no matter the time of year. (New York City—perhaps LA’s number one competitor—definitely can’t compare when it comes to this particular metric, because the winters there are absolutely brutal.) And don’t forget how many amazing beaches there are to enjoy near LA, which some of our favorite outdoor venues in the city are on or directly adjacent to. That’s why it’s no surprise that when you plan a festive gathering of any kind—whether or not you’re involved in entertainment yourself in some capacity—you have an incredible array of options available to you when it comes to party venues in Los Angeles, with choices to suit a variety of budgets, aesthetics, party sizes, and other needs and preferences. Keep reading and we will cover everything you need to know about party locations in Los Angeles, outlining the most common types of LA party venues, breaking everything down by the city’s specific neighborhoods and suburbs, and describing transportation options for these different areas. We’ll also describe the less fun logistical aspects of the party planning process, including seasonal/weather considerations for the area, permitting requirements, and general pricing estimates/ranges for party venues in Los Angeles. Finally, we’ll draw on our specific expertise on party venues (and other kinds of short-term rental spaces) to guide you toward some of the coolest party venues in the city that you can rent through Peerspace—there are literally more than 2,600 unique spaces in Los Angeles to choose from on our platform, which is an amazingly broad selection but can also be a bit overwhelming if you’ve never used our search filters to narrow down your search results before.

Types of Party Venues in Los Angeles

One of LA’s most common venue types are rooftop bars and lounges, which are made all the more popular by the fact that they can be used year-round, thanks to LA’s amazing weather. Many of them also offer perfect views of uniquely LA vistas, like the city’s beaches or skyline, giving them a particularly glamorous feel. A great example is this rooftop with a panoramic view of the downtown skyline. Large, standalone private houses and mansions, including numerous historic homes built by famous mid century architects, are also excellent party locations in Los Angeles. Even if you don’t own a home like this, you can rent one for a few hours to experience the joy of hosting a party at one of these luxurious locations. Many of them also come with beautiful backyards and stunning views of their surroundings, like this gorgeous home built in 1947–1951 in the Usonian style, which is located at the top of Mt. Washington and has fantastic views in all directions. There are also numerous loft spaces and art galleries available for rent as party locations in Los Angeles if you’re going for that chic, artsy vibe. For instance, this large warehouse loft and gallery in Westlake offers 3,000 square feet of space in an historic 1920s warehouse loft building, accommodating hundreds of guests at a time.

LA by Neighborhoods and Suburbs (Including Transport)

The city of Los Angeles is an enormous, sprawling metropolis that contains more than 500 square miles, while Greater Los Angeles covers almost 34,000 square miles—it’s by far the largest metropolitan region in the country. Within LA are a variety of different neighborhoods and suburbs, each of which has its own unique character and different transportation options. Unfortunately, much of LA is only easy to access by car, but availability of public transit varies significantly depending on which neighborhood you’re in. Downtown LA is the city’s commercial and creative center, with plenty of public transit including the Metro Rail and numerous bus lines. This means it’s accessible from almost anywhere in LA. Hollywood’s major attractions and nightlife are also accessible via the Metro Red Line. Beverly Hills, renowned for its luxury shopping and dining (and beautiful homes, some of which you can rent through Peerspace) is mainly accessible by car, but it’s also serviced by several bus routes. On the coast, Santa Monica and Venice Beach are the place to go for a laid-back vibe and beachside venues. They’re connected to downtown via the Metro Expo Line and are also particularly bike-friendly compared to the rest of the city, in case you’re a regular bike commuter. The San Fernando Valley, which includes neighborhoods like Studio City and Burbank, is heavily dependent on car travel, but is accessible via the Orange Line busway. Meanwhile, suburbs like Pasadena and Glendale have a classic suburban feel, but are connected to the city center by the Metro Gold Line.

Seasonal and Weather Considerations for Parties

LA might very well be one of the best places to throw an outdoor party, thanks to its mild and sunny weather all year round. If your party will be in the summer, expect it to be warm and dry, ideal for beach/pool parties and rooftop gatherings. Spring and fall are a little less hot but still comfortable, great for garden parties and other outdoor gatherings. Meanwhile, LA’s mild winters do still include occasional rain, so you might want to consider an indoor venue (or putting up a tent at an outdoor venue) for a winter party.
You’ll want to make sure that your party adheres to LA’s permitting and legal requirements. Thankfully, if you’re serving alcohol at your party, you won’t need an Alcohol Beverage Control (ABC) permit unless your party is open to the general public and you’re planning to charge for the alcohol you’re serving—private parties don’t have to worry about this. Noise regulations can be also stringent in Los Angeles, with the City of Los Angeles defining an unlawful party as a “loud or unruly gathering” with noise audible 150 feet from the property line, public intoxication, obstruction of a street or public right of way, and other such disturbances of the peace. Avoid these violations to ensure your party doesn’t get you in any legal trouble—if you do, you may be required to pay fines or face other penalties.

LA Party Venue Pricing Considerations

The cost of renting a party venue in Los Angeles can vary significantly depending on the type of venue, its location, and the amenities that it offers. In general, though, the cost of living in LA is much higher than elsewhere—8 percent higher than the state average and 50 percent higher than the national average—and that’s reflected in its venue rental prices. While you can find high-quality venues for rent on Peerspace at less than $100 per hour, these are less common than in more affordable cities. In trendy areas like Hollywood and Downtown LA, lofts and art galleries are available for anywhere from $125 to $1,000 per hour, with an average cost of about $300 per hour. Rooftop venues with amazing views of the city tend to be on the more expensive end of things. Meanwhile, renting out a luxury mansion in areas like Malibu or Beverly Hills can be anywhere from $500 to $2,000 per hour, making these rentals unattainable for all but the highest budgets. Beachside venues near Santa Monica and Venice Beach can range from $150 to $800 per hour, for an average rental price of about $250 per hour. Look to suburban areas like the San Fernando Valley for more budget-friendly options like homes, backyards, and other spaces that generally range from about $75 to $200 per hour.
