“The White Lotus” is a comedy-drama mini-series following guests and employees at an elite Hawaiian resort – The White Lotus. While everything is paradise on the surface, the facade begins to deteriorate as a much darker picture emerges. And neither the chipper hotel employees nor the picture-perfect guests are exactly what they appear to be. 

The show has an ensemble cast featuring Murray Bartlett, Connie Britton, Jennifer Coolidge, and more. But the real star of the show here is The White Lotus itself. Where is “The White Lotus” filming location?

To get things as authentic as possible, the production filmed on location at a real Hawaiian resort. 

The real White Lotus is the Four Seasons Resort Maui. The resort has over 15 acres of property by the seaside and tons of luxurious amenities for guests. There are two pools, a top-of-the-line spa, three golf courses, and even a Wolfgang Puck Spago restaurant. It’s the epitome of luxury in Hawaii. 

But if you want to stay here yourself, be prepared to shell out some serious cash. Rooms at The Four Seasons can go anywhere from $845 to $25,000 per night. But even at these prices, the hotel never has trouble booking rooms – except during the pandemic, when travel screeched to a halt. But without the pandemic, it’s possible that “The White Lotus” would’ve never come to be.

Filming took place during the pandemic

While many shows put on the breaks during COVID-19, the pandemic restrictions were what initially sparked the premise of “The White Lotus.” 

“HBO came to me and was hoping I could come up with some idea that was COVID-friendly and in one location,” “The White Lotus” creator Mike White told the Hollywood reporter. “I was like, ‘Maybe we can do a show in a posh hotel?’ That was kind of the initial idea, then I thought there’s something I’ve always wanted to write about the leisure world and people trying to escape their lives and then ending up being more stuck in a crucible.”

The production then found the perfect “The White Lotus” filming location at The Four Seasons and set the wheels in motion. Filming for “The White Lotus” took place from October-December 2020. Due to COVID protocols, the cast and crew actually stayed inside the hotel during filming. 

“It turned into this weird film camp,” said actor Steve Zahn. “We got so tight because we didn’t go away, you didn’t go to your house, you’re not staying in different places. The crew stayed there, the extras; we knew the extras, first time in my life we actually got to know people.”

The resort received a makeover

While the production had the hotel all to themselves, they decided to redecorate the rooms for a more custom look. Production designer Laura Fox transformed the refined and elegant Four Seasons decor into something a bit bolder, creating the aesthetic of “The White Lotus.”

“The fabric started the process and that led to the characters,” Fox told Variety. To help tell the story, Fox chose colors and patterns that reflected the characters in each hotel suite. For example, Shane and Rachel initially start out in the grounded palm suite but later transfer to the bolder pineapple suite as the story advances. 

“The pineapple suite had lower ceilings, but he was happy because he got the more expensive room,” said Fox. “It just adds to who [the characters] are. That suite was ridiculous because his character was just a bit ridiculous.”

The crew wasn’t allowed to leave the hotel for three months due to COVID protocols, so they employed dedicated shoppers to scout out pieces for the rooms. The end result is a unique set of suites that creates a totally distinct vibe for the hotel.

“The White Lotus” filming location for season 2

HBO recently announced that “The White Lotus” has been renewed for another season. But instead of returning to The Four Seasons in Maui, production scouted out a new “The White Lotus” filming location. 

According to Variety, season 2 of the White Lotus will be filmed in Italy at another Four Seasons resort–specifically, the Four Seasons San Domenico Palace in Sicily.  

The second season of White Lotus will feature new cast members like Michael Imperioli and Aubrey Plaza. But some familiar faces will also be returning, like Jennifer Coolidge as Tanya McQuoid. 

Production for season 2 began in February 2022 and was said to wrap in April 2022. HBO just released a trailer, announcing the new season is just around the corner in October 2022. We can’t wait to see what the Italian branch of “The White Lotus” has in store!
