The latest entry in the much beloved “Ghostbusters” series, “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” was released in 2021. This film was directed by Jason Reitman, the son of the director of the original “Ghostbusters” movie back in 1984. The story also follows the family lineage of Egon Spangler as they discover what he left behind, becoming Ghostbusters themselves and meeting some familiar faces along the way.

One interesting aspect that separated this “Ghostbusters” movie from the rest is the fact that it didn’t take place in New York City. This time, the storyline was based in Summerville, Oklahoma, quite the departure from the bright lights of the big city.

This change made for an interesting twist on the “Ghostbusters” series and was sure to raise the question: “Where was ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ filmed?” We have the answers as well as some specific locations that fans may want to check out.

Before we go anywhere, we have to determine whether Summerville, Oklahoma is a real place. This will help us to answer the question: where was “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” filmed?

According to HITC, to get the Oklahoma look they wanted for production, they moved to Calgary, Alberta in Canada. So if fans were looking to visit the town of Summerville for themselves, they’ll have to check out the towns of Drumheller, Fort Macleod, and Crossfield, all located near Calgary.

Jason Reitman and his father Ivan are both Canadian, so this might explain why he stuck to his native Canada instead of filming on location somewhere in Oklahoma. And now that we know the area where “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” was filmed, we can go ahead and get into some of the specifics.

One place that fans will surely want to know about is the Spangler house. The dilapidated farmhouse that Egon’s daughter Callie inherits is sure to beg the question “Where was ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ filmed?”

According to the Calgary Herald, it was no easy task to find the ideal location. After scouting locations in New Mexico and Oklahoma, the production found that Calgary was perfect. However, they still had to scour around 320 square kilometers in Foothills County to find the house’s location.

Unfortunately, it seems that the haunted house in the movie is not an actual home. In fact, it was a set that was torn down after the production wrapped. But next, we have a few locations that fans are actually able to visit for themselves in the Calgary area.

Now that we know where the Spangler farmhouse was located, we can move on to some other memorable locations that will help answer the question “Where was ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ filmed?”

The Spanger family farm

Atlas of Wonders has some answers for us, starting with the giant cowboy statue that the Spangler family passes on their way to the farm. This is the Bar U Ranch National Historic Site, about an hour outside of Calgary. The historical site exists to celebrate the ranching heritage of the Alberta region and the Rocky Mountains.

There’s plenty for visitors to do in addition to seeing the huge cowboy statue, so this is one that’s definitely worth checking out.

The mine shaft

Next up is the cave where the Shandor Mining Company’s mine shaft is located. This is actually Dorothy Ferry Bridge, near the hamlet of Dorothy in Alberta. There’s another location that’s also near Dorothy – the huge grain silo that’s seen in several scenes can also be found there.

Other locations

For a couple of other interesting locations, we turn to Fan Trippers, which has the scoop on some other memorable locations from the movie, like the factory where the kids first test out the proton packs. This is in fact the Turner Valley Gas Plant, which is a lot more inviting than it sounds. It’s now a museum that chronicles the legacy and history of Alberta’s oil fields.

Another significant location is the Chinese restaurant where Callie and Gary encounter a terrifying green ghost. This actually isn’t a Chinese restaurant at all – it’s called Ng’s Cafe and is located in the town of Beiseker.

Last is the Walmart where Paul Rudd encounters all the tiny Stay-Puft Marshmallow Men and is chased by Gozer. If you want to visit this Walmart for yourself you can find it in the Deerfoot City Shopping Center. That’s not all, there are plenty more locations if you’re still wondering, “Where was ‘Ghostbusters: Afterlife’ filmed?” near Calgary.
