Did they film “Seinfeld” on location in New York City?

The creator of Seinfeld, Larry David, and Jerry Seinfeld himself both spent plenty of time in New York City, and it shows when you watch “Seinfeld.” However, some of the scenes that are clearly shot on set are sure to prompt the question: where was “Seinfeld” filmed?

According to The Cinemaholic, the bulk of the shooting was not in New York City but in Los Angeles, California. In fact, they shot the pilot at Red Studios (known as Ren-Mar Studios at the time of the production) and the remainder at CBS Studio Center in the San Fernando Valley.

If you ever find yourself at Red Studios, they shot the pilot on Stage 8, while they filmed the show at CBS Studio Center’s Soundstage 19 and then on Stage 9, the largest on the lot.

The reason why the New York City street shots that we see many times in the show look so real is that CBS Studio Center has what they call the “New York Street” set lot, which manages to pass for the genuine article. They also use a backlot at the CBS Studio Center as New York City’s Central Park.

One other location that you can actually find in Los Angeles is the exterior of Jerry’s apartment building. The Cinemaholic reports that it was filmed at 757 New Hampshire in Los Angeles, so feel free to drive by and take a look for yourself!

Another restaurant that has become an iconic location after appearing on “Seinfeld” is the soup restaurant where Jerry butts heads with the infamous “Soup Nazi”. The same article in Distractify says if you want to find it for yourself, head down to West 55th Street and get yourself some lunch from the Soup Man Restaurant that started it all.

Apparently, the “Soup Nazi” is based on the real proprietor of the restaurant, named Al Yeganeh. Al was understandably not too happy with the notoriety that came with being the inspiration for an unforgettable character on one of the most famous sitcom episodes ever.

Where was the comedy club from “Seinfeld”?

One hallmark of the show that fans will remember is the stand-up scenes that bookend most episodes. Jerry can be seen doing his set in front of a live audience, and this was one of the few filming locations that’s actually in New York City. According to Bloomberg, “The Improv” was a comedy club located at 358 West 44th Street that is now called “Producers Club.”
