What’s Like an Airbnb for a Banquet Hall? (2026)

If your event calls for space, renting a sprawling Airbnb may seem like a cheaper alternative to reserving a banquet hall. And the allure is understandable. You picture 90 people enjoying a catered meal at round tables set up intentionally on the first floor of a five-bedroom estate that costs less than a large hall or facility. Then you read the fine print.

Airbnb sells overnights, not event spaces, and it bans parties and events at all listings worldwide—making a banquet tough to pull off.

Find out why Airbnb falls short for banquets, and how to find a space built for hosting a crowd.

Can you use an Airbnb as a banquet hall?

Quick answer: No, not for the seated event itself.

Airbnb doesn’t allow parties and disruptive gatherings. The policy is enforced by a machine-learning screening system that flags bookings on signals like group size, trip length, and distance from the guest’s home address.

That rules out precisely what a banquet hall is often used for. If your goal is to rent an Airbnb to host an event, it’s not the right fit.

Where Airbnb falls short for a banquet-style event

Airbnb invites overnight guests—not a guest list of 80 people. The gaps show up early, and they’re hard to work around.

Anti-party flags can block your booking

Ask a host directly whether you can hold a reception at their place and the answer is almost always no. Even hosts who would welcome your event get overruled by Airbnb’s anti-party screening, which reads hundreds of signals from bookings and the guest’s account history to determine disruptive-gathering risk.

“AIRBNB is not a platform for events and parties – it specifically prohibits them … If you want to have events/parties at your listing then I would suggest you promote your listing on events platforms.” — Helen3, Airbnb Community Center thread “Properties suitable for events”

Cancellations can be triggered anytime, even after a booking goes through. For a dinner that already has a date and a caterer attached, that’s a lot to risk.

Local groups get flagged

Booking a space in same town you live is one of the biggest factors taken into account.

“Airbnb need to reevaluate this whole process. I saw somewhere that if you try to book in same town they’ll flag it but why can’t locals book it?” — Sue2605, Airbnb Community Center thread “Can’t book because I’m ‘party’ risk”

More often than not, banquets are local affairs, planned and attended by folks who live nearby. It’s another risk factor to take into account when considering Airbnb for your event.

You can only book by the night

There’s no hourly option on Airbnb. The shortest booking is 24 hours.

“There is no way to do a reservation any shorter than overnight. … the platform does not recognize a daytime only stay.” — Kelly149, Airbnb Community Center thread “Does AirBNB have a policy about hourly rentals?”

Banquets typically last an afternoon or evening, not an overnight. Regardless, you’re paying for the full day, and some hosts even set up two-night minimums.

Amenities aren’t included

Homes are set up for families, not banquets. And retrofitting a house for a banquet would require a lot of costly vendors and rentals, likely surpassing the cost of renting a proper hall.

“While the house is beautiful and didn’t cost too much, the expenses have gotten out of control with all the rentals we’ve had to do. (…) On hindsight, I wouldn’t have gone the AirBnB route because it’s alot more expensive and alot more work than we expected.” — Melissa, WeddingWire discussion thread “Airbnb Venue”

Airbnb’s default 3 p.m. check-in and 11 a.m. checkout can further complicate things when vendors are involved. A noon luncheon would either require a host to allow early arrival, or a rental that begins the day prior. Bottom line, the platform isn’t friendly to events that demand extra amenities and vendors.

Your date can be cancelled

A traditional banquet hall typically secures your date with a contract. Airbnb doesn’t work like that. Both the platform and the host can cancel at any time. And the penalty hosts pay starts at only around $50.

The host cancelled with 4 days notice. We are going to a family reunion and now have no chance of booking a place together in the area. A weekend totally ruined. What’s worse is that I see at least 3 other guests had their booking cancelled at short notice at this property. The host just said ‘sorry – what more can I say?’” — Nick88, Airbnb Community Center thread “Host cancelled less than 24 hours before check in”

While guests are refunded when a host cancels on Airbnb, the impact on vendor deposits and travel arrangements can be costly.

Options abound once you consider true banquet halls and adjacent venues.

Choose a venue that fits your plans

Banquet halls and ballrooms

Banquet halls are the best place to start as they offer an open floor, plenty of tables and chairs, a proper service entrance, and often a stage or a dance floor.

Lofts

Loft venues buy square footage and high ceilings without the banquet-hall look, which suits a rehearsal dinner or an awards night. The building was made for freight, so a rental truck at the door is routine rather than a problem.

Warehouses

Warehouse spaces go bigger and hold a full band, a dance floor, and a bar without anyone shouting over the music. Renting a warehouse for the day is the standard move for an event that requires real square footage.

Mansions and estates

Mansion rentals give you the house look without the house rules: homes and estates listed for events, with hosts who expect a guest list. They’re the closest thing to an Airbnb for a large group, and a penthouse does the same job on a smaller floor plate.

Rooftops and outdoor spaces

Rooftop venues and outdoor event spaces give guests somewhere to mingle after dinner in warmer months. Hourly terrace rentals exist in most large markets, usually as a second room booked alongside a dining space.

Confirm what’s included

Before committing to a venue, make sure to confirm it’s outfitted with the basics:

  • Furniture: Ask how many tables and chairs are on site
  • Kitchen: Confirm whether there’s a commercial kitchen or a prep kitchen
  • Catering rules: Check that outside food is welcome
  • Load-in: Ask about the service door, the elevator, and whether rentals can arrive the morning of
  • Parking: Ask what’s on site and what the street looks like at 6 p.m.

“[We were a] group of about 50, and it fit everyone with room to spare, and with a ton of comfort. We had our Cross Country Team Banquet in the space, and it was an awesome space for the team, coaches, and parents. We will definitely be back” — Gavin T., Banquet Hall Venue Peerspace Review

A room that already owns its furniture saves you on rentals.

Prioritize vendor flexibility

Most hosts renting by the hour allow vendors of your choosing, but confirm this in writing before booking.

“The long banquet table plus the kitchen island offered enough space to set out the foods, desserts, and tea/drinks we brought.” — Sandra M., New York Banquet Hall Peerspace Review

Before you book, confirm the following:

  • Outside food is welcome
  • The kitchen can accommodate cooking or a caterer
  • Whether alcohol needs a licensed pourer
  • Vendor arrival time

Getting these answers early often saves time and money.

Compare what’s included

Line up the spaces you’re considering and compare included amenities.

“We were able to host a club banquet with 60 people in the space. My only thing is, there are only 50 seats, so we did have to rent 11 more” — Makayla L., New York Banquet Hall Peerspace Review

Any additional amenity outside what the space already offers becomes another thing to budget and plan for, making the event planning checklist just a little bit longer.

Setup and cleanup affect the total

Plan your reservation in three blocks to prevent under-booking time.

  • Setup (1 to 2 hours): Rentals arrive, tables are set up, the caterer begins prep in the kitchen
  • The event (3 to 5 hours): Cocktail hour, seated dinner, toasts, dancing
  • Breakdown (1 to 2 hours): Strike the tables, pack up the rentals, clear the space

Add in setup and breakdown before comparing listings. A cheap hourly rate with a tight load-in window can cost more than a higher rate that lets you in with time to spare.

We rent spaces by the hour, and every listing on our platform is there because the host welcomes events.

Our hosts expect a banquet

Our hosts are rent their venues expecting a gathering of some kind. This is clear from the start, so no workarounds are needed.

“Had a Friendsgiving dinner here. It helps that this place has a kitchen and space for a long rectangle banquet tables. With light decorations my guest were very pleased with the ambience.” — Lauren M., Party Venue Peerspace Review

In LA alone, our hosts have welcomed more than 28,000 in their banquet halls with a 4.9-star average and about a 98% rebook rate. Those numbers come from hosts who run events all the time.

You book by the hour

You pick a start and end time, and see the total before you book. A five-hour dinner costs five hours. There’s no overnight on the invoice and no cleaning fee arriving later.

“It’s like AIRBNB but rent by the hour.” – MMM, Trustpilot

This is the advantage of renting a venue by the hour. You’re buying a window of time, and that window is what you pay for.

Amenities are included

Most of our halls provide furniture, and many hosts are willing to set things up before you arrive as part of the booking, rather than an add on at the end.

“The space is great and bigger in person. We held a banquet for a college club and it easily fit our 50+ members. Great accommodation and was able to request additional chairs and tables for our event.” — Tenzin C., Banquet Hall Peerspace Review

Our filters allow you to sort for tables and chairs, kitchen access, and sound equipment before you shortlist anything.

See the space before you book

Our hosts can set up a visit before you book.

Airbnb doesn’t work this way. Its policy tells hosts to say no when guests ask to see the place first: “If someone asks to visit your place prior to booking, let them know it’s not possible.” That’s a lot of risk to take when planning a dinner. A walkthrough can help illuminate issues that can then be mitigated before your event.

Reviews that match your plan

Every review on our site comes from someone who held an event in the space you’re considering. It provides helpful insight into how the space operated under similar conditions, especially on capacity and kitchen setup.

“The place was a bar and lounge, but their professionalism was a higher standard than the majority of hotels or banquet halls. Karen, the manager, worked to make things very easy. She also showed us the whole space including an amazing private space upstairs.” — Hiromitsu S., New York Banquet Hall Peerspace Review

Dinners and banquets require specific accommodations and our reviews can help you determine if the space is the right fit for your event.

1. Start on the website or app.

Visit Peerspace.com or download the app (Apple App Store | Google Play Store).

  • Enter your city.
  • Enter the event. You can type “banquet hall,” or describe the night: wedding reception, awards dinner, quinceañera.

3. Filter by guest count, date, and budget.

  • Attendees: Be accurate. A room rated for 60 will feel tight with 85 once tables are set up.
  • When: Check availability for your full window, setup and breakdown included.
  • Price: Set a range that fits the room, not the whole event budget.

4. Use the filters that matter for a seated event.

  • Space type: Banquet hall, event space, loft, mansion, gallery
  • Amenities: Tables and chairs, kitchen, outside alcohol allowed, sound system, projector, Wi-Fi
  • Access: Elevator, service entrance, on-site parking

5. Read reviews from similar events.

Look for mentions of receptions, banquets, seated dinners, and guest counts near yours. Those reviews tell you how the room handles a crowd and whether the host was reachable.

6. Message the host before you book.

Send a short note and get the details in writing.

  • “We’re planning a seated dinner for [X] guests on [date]. Does the room fit that comfortably?”
  • “How many tables and chairs are on site, and what shape are the tables?”
  • “Can our caterer use the kitchen, and what’s available to plug in?”
  • “When can rentals be delivered and picked up?”

7. Book and confirm the details.

Book through the platform and you’ll get the address, host contact, and access instructions. Before the event, confirm your arrival time, share the booking details with your guests, and send the host your vendor list.

Book the room, not the house

A banquet hall does one job, and does it well. It welcomes a group for a celebration in a space that’s not only set up for it, but expects and welcomes it. Airbnb is built for sleeping. We’re built for events.

Whether you’re plating dinner for 90 or toasting a retirement, the room should already be set up for it.
